About us
Snøhetta is an international integrated architecture and design firm. The practice has a global presence, with offices spanning from Oslo, Paris, and Innsbruck, to New York, San Francisco. Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Adelaide and Melbourne. Snøhetta kick-started its career in 1989 with the competition-winning entry for the new library of Alexandria, Egypt. This was later followed by the commission for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City, among many others. Since its inception, the practice has maintained its original transdisciplinary approach, and integrates architectural, landscape, interior, product, graphic, digital design and art across its projects. The collaborative nature between Snøhetta's different disciplines is an essential driving force of the practice. Snøhetta is currently working on a wide range of international projects, including the Ordrupgaard Art Museum expansion in Denmark and the Shanghai Grand Opera House. Recently completed works include Le Monde Group Headquarters in Paris, Europe’s first underwater restaurant, Under, the redesign of the public space in Times Square, the expansion to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Lascaux IV: The International Centre for Cave Art, Powerhouse Brattørkaia and the design for Norway’s new banknotes. Snøhetta’s working method practices a simultaneous exploration of traditional handicraft and cutting-edge digital technology. At the heart of all Snøhetta’s work lies a commitment to social and environmental sustainability, shaping the built environment and design in the service of humanism. Snøhetta believes well-conceived design can help things run more efficiently, improve people’s well-being and make life more enjoyable. Every project is designed with strong, meaningful concepts in mind – concepts that can translate the ethos of its users and their context.

Located in Kautokeino, on the plains of Finnmark in Norway, Čoarvemátta opens its doors to the public. The building houses the Sámi National Theater Beaivváš, and the Sámi High School and Reindeer Herding School – important cultural institutions of The Sámi settlement area of Sápmi. Deriving from the Sámi words “čoarvi” and “mátta”, meaning “horn” and “root”, Čoarvemátta takes its name and shape from the strongest part of the reindeer antler. Wanting the building to be as close to nature as possible, natural materials such as wood and stone are used. The building follows the shapes of the terrain, with the roof pulling down towards the ground to meet the landscape. The elongated, continuous shape draws associations to carvings in a subject, such as a tool made of reindeer horns. A total of six new works have been created for the building. The artwork Sáráhkká, Juoksáhkká ja Uksáhkká (2024) is made by Rámavuol Elle Bigge, in collaboration with Merethe Kuhumunen. Snøhetta developed this project together with the architectural firm 70°N arkitektur, the entrepreneur Econor, and the artist Joar Nango. The Snøhetta designed temporary installation «Urban Blooms» in Innsbruck's old town helps to raise awareness of public space and the importance of non-commercial areas in the city. The pop-up urban oasis developed in collaboration with Innsbruck Tourism, will stay another few weeks in Kiebachgasse. Colourful timber modules such as planters with large bushes for shading, a lawn platform for relaxation, and seating blocks can be combined in many different ways, encouraging informal public use and creating a welcoming environment for everyone. Before these elements will be moved to a different location in Innsbruck we want to share some impressions of the community project transforming the street. Volunteers, locals, and Snøhetta team members came together to paint the street, creating vibrant patterns that include game areas like chess, tic-tac-toe, and a jumping game for children. This addition brings a playful and engaging element to the space. West of Muscat, on the coast of Gulf of Oman, the fish market has emerged as a new landmark on the waterfront along the lively corniche in Muttrah. Completed in 2017, the Snøhetta designed Muttrah Fish Market is created to serve as a focal point for the community of Muttrah, while simultaneously functioning as a hub for Oman's thriving fishing industry. Merging tradition with innovation, the 4.000 square meter fish market is designed to unite the old and the new sympathetically. The generous space creates a public meeting space where local fishermen and worldly tourist from all over the world meet under the same roof. One can observe from afar how the curved wall relates to the radial shape of the corniche and the wider bay area, interacting with the street by exposing the stairs from the roof terraces in the openings along the corniche. Referencing both the former waterfront and the continuation of the corniche, the fish market defines the boundaries of public space, interconnecting the city, the mountains, and the waterfront.
