Listening in public spaces to create a world of connection, belonging, and wellness.

About us

We listen in public spaces to prize human connection and end the epidemic of loneliness, disconnection, and hatred in our world today. Sidewalk Talk is a volunteer nonprofit with 7500 volunteers listening in over 89 locations across 15 countries every week to create a world of belonging. YOU BELONG HERE. Why? By listening in public spaces and prizing human connection we can radically alter many of the crises our world is facing today. Violence, discrimination, mental illness, environmental degradation, poverty, and political tribalism all start at as seed of isolation and loneliness. We aim to change the shape of our disconnective communities, politics, workplaces, and economies by starting on the sidewalks all over the world. listening and connecting.

In a time when we're all exploring how to use power wisely, it’s essential to remember that listening is the ultimate act of building 'power with' rather than 'power over' relationships. Listening isn't just about hearing words; it's about valuing another's perspective and creating a space where everyone feels seen and heard. By truly listening, we foster mutual respect and understanding, breaking down barriers that divide us. At Sidewalk Talk, we practice this daily. We believe in the power of listening to improve mental health, social health, and community well-being. It's about connecting on a deeper level and building stronger, healthier communities. Join us in our mission to transform the way we relate to one another. Let's create 'power with' relationships through the simple, profound act of listening. Grab a friend and go listen on the sidewalk by adding your name here. We share our knowledge democratically. Or sign up to be a background checked chapter leader and build your own listening non profit using Sidewalk Talk's name. Either way, we just want more listening in the world. We love you. Your listening matters. Start here or the link in in our bio: https://lnkd.in/d8jbaQT #SidewalkTalk #ListeningHeals #MentalHealth #SocialHealth #CommunityHealth #PowerWith

A society grows great when its people listen to one another with open hearts and minds, promoting both social and mental health. Help us build a great society. Learn to listen. You have three ways to get involved: 1. Start listening on the sidewalk 2. Take a listener training with Sidewalk Talk 3. Put up the Sidewalk Talk election yard sign that reads "Your Humanity Matters More To Me Than Who You Vote For." We can create a loving world that cares for people and it starts with listening. Won't you join in? #SidewalkTalk #mentalhealth #socialhealth #freelistening

At Sidewalk Talk, you can contribute to health: mental health, social health, and political health when you are visible on street corners everywhere, reminding people that their longings matter. We won't turn their longings into a polarizing argument. We want to deeply hear what people most long for. It may sound simple, but when we listen like this, we create healthy humans and a just world. What kind of world would be possible if we listened for the longing underneath? Coming in September, you can join a practice community to learn the to HEAR with heart - to Honor people instead of engaging in power over stuff, to Embody what you feel and set good boundaries, to check your Assumptions and bias, and to Respond with receptivity and delight in this other person's humanity. Led by the fabulous Travia Fitzpatrick. You can add your name to the interest list here: https://lnkd.in/erX9NYfa #mentalhealth #socialhealth #listening #empathy #compassion #longing #aggression

We have a very special announcement. Please put a heart in the comments to congratulate Travia! @TraviaFitzpatrick has been part of Sidewalk Talk since the very beginning. Without Travia, HEAR would not have been born. She has now officially stepped in to be the head of all HEAR programs by Sidewalk Talk as well as the lead trainer of this 11-week program that covers: 𝗛onoring people with your listening, honoring yourself by setting heartfelt boundaries now drawing from Juliane Taylor Shore's boundaries work! 𝗘mbodying your experience so your nervous system can be calm and grounded and your are moving from your Centered Self rather than protector parts when you are listening. 𝗔ssumptions checking. We have a ton of bias about ourselves and other people. If we become uber self compassionate about this idea that bias is part of the human condition and are easeful at owning them, then we listen bravely with curiousity rather than fear. 𝗥eceive people's words and underlying sentiment and respond with care, validation, and kindness. Travia is launching two new cohorts of HEAR in September. And she will be bringing a custom version of HEAR for corporate teams. And if you want someone to fly in and take your team out to listen on the sidewalk for a team building experience and contribute to the #mentalhealth and #socialhealth of your #community we are here to HEAR! Add your name to this list to be invited or see the link in the Instagram bio. https://lnkd.in/erX9NYfa

You may have heard our livestream conversations in May with leading thinkers on connection, community organizing, justice, mental health, and personal growth. One recommended book was Sarah Schulman's "Conflict Is Not Abuse." Conflict means we are sorting out how to be different while maintaining the health of our community. And what skill is super important for healthy, heartfelt conflict? You guessed it: Listening. Join our 11-week HEAR Heart Centered Listening training and practice community. While we don't do conflict mediation, we cover boundaries, nervous system regulation, and bias. Those who sign up will also get free access to Traci's reboot of "I Wish You Knew Me: Listening Across our Political Differences." More soon. For now, add your name to the HEAR interest list to get a personal invitation as space will run out. https://lnkd.in/erX9NYfa #confict #mediation #empathy #listening #sarahschulman #conflictisnotabuse
