On Wednesday, our Strategy & Innovation lead Rob van Alphen joined Communication and Public Relations Australia to present on the coming Age of AI. In the webinar, Rob discussed the exponential speed of change and the opportunities (generative) #AI unlocks for communications professionals and our industry. A deep-dive into some of the technology’s core challenges, with a focus on AI-generated misinformation & disinformation, including #deepfakes, was an eye-opener. With AI becoming increasingly democratised and demonetised, its potential impact for both good and bad is vast. Several techniques are being explored to mitigate risks of misinformation, such as AI-based detection tools, digital watermarking and provenance tracking using blockchain. Technology solutions alone, however, are not enough. We need much wider, concerted efforts from different stakeholders. For example: ✅ 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 (e.g. media literacy, education system) ✅ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (e.g. OpenAI, Midjourney, … adding a ‘watermark’ upon creation of the asset ✅ 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (e.g. Meta, Bytedance, … integration AI detection tools, updating platform policies, improved content moderation and user reporting mechanisms) ✅ 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 (e.g. data protection laws, deepfake regulation) The World Economic Forum identified AI-powered misinformation and disinformation as the most severe short-term global threat. Organisations must be prepared for a possible turbulent future. Upskilling staff to build AI literacy is just one of the immediate steps. For as long as they have operated in the public eye, #privateequity firms have faced unique reputational challenges, often stemming from the nature of their operations and their interactions with various stakeholders and the media. While private equity operates privately, it doesn't have to be secretive. In our latest article, Camille Middleditch, Deputy GM of Sandpiper New Zealand, explores how PE firms can position themselves as a force for good by leveraging strategic communications that emphasise their efforts in driving growth, creating jobs, developing leaders, and committing to ESG principles.
