【PolyU BME delegates visit Sun Yat-sen University】 PolyU BME and the School of Biomedical Engineering at the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) jointly organised a two-day PolyU-SYSU Joint Biomedical Engineering Symposium on August 26 and 30. Ir Prof. Ming Zhang, Head of BME, and Prof. Mo Yang, Associate Head (Research) of BME, visited SYSU on August 26 to explore the potential biomedical engineering collaborations between the two departments. On August 29, five more BME colleagues joined Prof. Mo Yang to visit SYSU to conduct research presentations and discussions, which were beneficial to the research development of both departments. PolyU Biomedical Engineering (BME) Programme (since 2005) was evolved from the Prosthetics & Orthotics (P&O) Programme (1995-1999) and Health Technology Programme (2000-2004). It is the 1st BME programme in Hong Kong and has been integrated with strong rehabilitation engineering and P&O elements. It is also the 1st accredited BME programme by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). The P&O concentration of our BME programme has also been accredited by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics as Category I Professional Training Programme.

Dr Ker completed his B.S. in Molecular Biology and Genetics at the University of Sydney, Ph.D. in Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, and postdoctoral training in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University. Dr Ker’s research interests include biomaterial development and computer vision-based cell tracking. Dr Annie Wang, member of RISports and Research Assistant Professor of PolyU | Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), led a research team to install a new multicamera system at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) karate studio. The system can do markerless motion capture and performance analysis for karate athletes. It is welcomed by Mr Mohamed Elhosieny Aly, Technical Commission Chairman of World Karate Federation and Chairman of Asian Karate Federation Technical Commission, Mr William Thomas, Head Karatedo Coach of HKSI, and karate referee of Asian countries. The Distinguished Sports Research Seminar "Wearable Iontronic Devices for Sports and Healthcare Applications" delivered by Prof. Tingrui PAN, Chair Professor of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the Executive Director of Institute for Innovative Medical Devices, organised by RISports and jointly co-organised by the PolyU | Department of Biomedical Engineering, the PolyU - Samaranch Sports Development Centre and the PolyU - HKSI Research Centre was successfully held yesterday. 【Faculty Awards for Outstanding Achievement 2024🏆】 BME Associate Professor Dr Xiaoling Hu had been awarded the Faculty Awards for Outstanding Achievement 2024 - Outstanding Individual Award - Knowledge Transfer: Industry! Dr Hu is the founder of Thecon Technology (HK) Limited (a PolyU academic-led startup). The “Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton” developed by the research team led by Dr HU had recently won the Gold Medal at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. All winners of the Faculty Awards for Outstanding Achievement 2024 were chosen by a Faculty Assessment Panel, comprising Heads (or their delegates) and chaired by the Dean of Engineering, from amongst a pool of well-qualified nominees put forward by individual departments. The selection was made with reference to the indicative criteria for assessment as laid down by the University for the exercise.
