This week, Gartner published its very first Hype Cycle for Backup and Data Protection Technologies. Analyst Mike Hoeck argues that data is an organization's single most critical asset. With the volume of data growing exponentially, so are the threats to it. Hoeck writes that it is no longer sufficient to rely upon traditional backup and recovery technology and outdated methods. So his team set out on an ambitious journey to evaluate 20 hyped backup and data protection technologies that are enablers to a more holistic and proactive approach to protecting business-critical data. Readers of this space won't be surprised to discover that Digital Communications Governance & Archiving (DCGA) was included as one of the 20 leading spaces within the Hype Cycle. Here are five key take-aways: 1. Despite being one dot on the cycle, DCGA is quite a broad category. Indeed, the 10 sample vendors for DCGA included LeapXpert (a leading communications platform), as well as leading archives like Mimecast and Veritas Technologies LLC and AI-driven surveillance platforms like Shield. 2. The Priority Matrix maps the benefit rating for each technology against the amount of time required to reach the beginning of mainstream adoption. DCGA is ranked as a high priority and high benefit technology, with 2-5 years till mainstream adoption. 3. Gartner estimates that DCGA penetration is currently at 20% to 50% of target audience. We believe the number to be much smaller. 4. Inline with its overall data protection approach, Gartner recommends that enterprises shift from a reactive to proactive posture on DCGA-specific solutions to mitigate potential compliance and regulatory issues. 5. The DCGA dot is placed a third of the way through the phase called "The Trough of Disillusionment." This is interesting because when LeapXpert was founded DCGA didn't exist and the was not included in research. But, if it were, it would have been merely labeled an "Innovation Trigger" (the very first part of the hype cycle). It seems that DCGA has matured extremely quickly. Now, the hype has settled. More realistic expectations can lead to sustainable growth and development for both DCGA vendors and enterprises seeking responsible business communications that govern their comms and protect their eComms data.
