#HighlightedPapers On this International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we stress the need for bolstering efforts to achieve climate goals and advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A pioneering study on 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘥 by Professor Meng Gao (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (Social Sciences) 香港浸會大學文學及社會科學院 (社會科學) and his collaborators sheds light on enhancing China's food security and underscores the importance of ozone pollution control and stringent air quality regulations. Here we employ a statistical model using satellite-based observations and flexible functional forms to analyse the synergistic effects of reductions in ozone and aerosols on China’s food security. The model consistently shows that ozone is detrimental to crops, whereas aerosol has variable effects. China’s maize, rice and wheat yields are projected to increase by 7.84%, 4.10% and 3.43%, respectively, upon reaching two air quality targets (60 μg m−3 for peak-season ozone and 35 μg m−3 for annual fine particulate matter). Average calories produced from these crops would surge by 4.51%, potentially allowing China to attain grain self-sufficiency 2 years earlier than previously estimated. These results show that ozone pollution control should be a high priority to increase staple crop edible calories, and future stringent air pollution regulations would enhance China’s food security.

HKBU alumna Dr Denise Fan (Academy of Music) shifted her career to research at her alma mater through the esteemed RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme (now known as the RGC Junior Research Fellow Scheme). With a deep passion for classical music, she specialises in both Baroque and modern cello. Dr Fan has collaborated with notable early music ensembles and performed at prestigious institutions such as Harvard and Yale. Her research explores how native languages influence sensitivity to sound, impacting string performance, and she seeks to make significant contributions in the field. The RGC Junior Research Fellow Scheme (JRFS) aims to support global outstanding postdoctoral researchers at UGC-funded universities with a vision to propel Hong Kong's research and development landscape.
