voraciouspangolin asked:

Hello monsieur herp and bird, I come bearing pictures of a wasp nest I took down for my dad(he's deeply allergic). It's winter and I've been observing this nest for months now, and even before temperatures dropped below freezing, I was almost fully certain that there were no remaining wasps inside.

I tried to keep it as much in one piece as possible, but it had sustained damage from a branch that fell and shredded the entrance

The Shell - idk the proper word for it. But here it is

As I pulled out the comb from the shell, I noticed that there was a lil guy still half way in one of the hexagons...

image

I gently pulled it out in hopes of getting pics for an ID. Idk how hard it is to identify wasps but I feel like you're the guy for it, so I felt like I'd shoot my shot. I'd love to be able to tell my dad what kind of wasp it was lol. No worries if you can't ID it :]

I found dozens of these little guys out in the lawn tonight when I took the dogs out. It seems a little (very) late in the year for caterpillars though? Are they supposed to be out in the winter?

USA, Pacific Northwest

Caterpillar ID - PNW:

I cannot tell which species from the photos, but I believe that this is an Armyworm or Cutworm Moth (Spodoptera sp.), family Noctuidae.

wildernestt asked:

Hello I know I just requested something recently, but if ur asks r open and it's okay to request again, then could I get some bugs native to the Amazon rainforest please? Thanks in advance.

Also glad to see what you look like after so long not knowing, you look great and definitely not how I would've expected you to look! As always thanks for running such an interesting and wholesome blog.

Amazonian Bugs:

I think I have a few ideas for you!

Blister Beetle Mimic Wood Roach (Melyroidea magnifica), family Polyphagidae, Peru and Ecuador

  • Claims have been made by researchers that this species is eusocial (at least partially, like honeybees, many ants, and termites), however this assertion is not accepted by many entomologists. The original researchers that posited eusociality in this communal species made many dubious assumptions.
  • This species obviously mimics blister beetles that can blast caustic chemicals at predators. The cockroach cannot, however.
