I had the pleasure of speaking at the BSUN 2024 Congress and the 16th Conference of Rectors from the Black Sea Region, which took place on July 11 and 12, in the panel discussion on “Promoting Science-Based Decision Making in Society and the Role of Universities.” The theme of the #BSUNCongress2024, “Summit of the Future for the Black Sea Region,” was chosen to align the overarching commitments of the UN with the emerging themes and trends in global higher #educationsystems. This theme is of significant interest to the Rectors of BSUN, stakeholders, decision-makers, and key actors in higher education. I gave a speech on SDSN Global Climate Hub: Science-based Solutions Pathways for Climate Neutrality and Climate Resilience. During my presentation, I emphasized the crucial role of education as the primary driver of change. I highlighted the mission of the Global Climate Hub’s Unit “Education, Training, Upskilling, and Reskilling,” which aims to support the green transition by educating and training people and building skills ecosystems aligned with national, regional, local, and sectoral green strategies. The educational programs will be delivered under six themes corresponding to the six #SDG #transformations. In addition, I referred to the SDSN Global Climate Hub report (launched at #COP28) “Modeling Net-Zero Pathways: https://lnkd.in/d4NsFF6t " which provides net-zero strategies for each country in the #EU27, the #UK, and the #Balkans and it will now extend to #decarbonization pathways in the #energy sector for selected countries in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region (to be launched at UN Summit of the Future and #COP29). The event was part of the global efforts contributing to the UN General Assembly's work, which will take place in September in New York for the adoption of a Pact for the Future. This week I was in @China, @Qufu and @Beijing, for the Confucius-Aristotle Symposium: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges’. As stated during my opening remarks in Qufu, we were honored to host and organize the last three ‘Confucius-Aristotle Symposium: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges’ in Greece 2019 (https://lnkd.in/dCy3ytwJ) 2022 (https://lnkd.in/dSrfxGKs) and 2023 (https://lnkd.in/drTBxd_m) focusing on ancient #wisdom for modern #challenges and identifying common heritage and shared values to promote peace and cooperation in the 21st century. This year, we gathered in China, hosted by the @Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies, the China Confucius Foundation, the Tsinghua University Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Mencius Foundation, to honor #Confucius and the global impact of ancient Chinese civilization. The focus was on the common approaches of #Aristotle, Confucius, and other traditions and exploring their meaning for our time. 150 world-famous scholars and leaders from over 10 countries gathered to discuss the contemporary relevance of Confucianism and Aristotelianism, comparative philosophy, global ethics, and the theory and practice of "the commons." Topics spanned cultural dialogue, classical studies, political philosophy, ecology, religion, artificial intelligence, and public policy. Sustainable Development Solutions Network

#WCEREA Policy Session on "Climate Change, Land-Use, and Biodiversity: Economic Perspectives" at #EAERE2024, organized by the World Council of Environmental and Resource Economists Association, which I am honored to chair, in collaboration with the other world associations of #environmental and resource #economists (Asian Association of Environmental and Resouce Economics (AAERE), AERE, AFAERE, LAERE, AARES) the session provided a global view on what makes #climate, #biodiversity and #land use policy most effective, for as many as possible, and for as long as possible. Our panel discussion focused on crucial strategies for long-term #biodiversity and land use policies aligned with climate #action. During my speech, I have presented the methodological framework of SDSN Global Climate Hub, which consist of three layers of analysis: First, the #Science layer that develops national dynamic #pathways for the transition to Climate Neutrality and Resilience, by integrating systems analysis of climate, energy, transport, land-use, marine-use, health and socioeconomic mathematical models. Second, the Transformative #Stakeholder #Engagement methods for empowering stakeholders to co-design and localise the science driven pathways. Third the #AI digital infrastructure that collects, aggregates and makes available the needed data, models and tools for open access mode of operation for all stakeholders. More specifically with regards to the nexus between Climate Change, Land-use systems and Biodiversity, I have referred to our work with #FABLE and as a case study example I presented the results from the #FABLEScenathon for Greece - read the report: https://lnkd.in/dpx7X2Ww For further information on the SDSN #GlobalClimateHub you can read my interview in Springer Nature Group Sustainability: https://lnkd.in/dvfiEZTp Chair: Simone Borghesi EAERE President, European University Institute and University of Siena Speakers: Ben Groom, University of Exeter and Dragon Capital Chair in Biodiversity Economics Gianni Guastella, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore & Deloitte Italy Phoebe Koundouri, Athens University of Economics and Business, Denmark Technical University Ruslana Rachel Palatnik, The Max Stern Yezreel Valley College and NRERC- Natural Resource and Environmental Research Center, University of Haifa European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) AE4RIA - Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria

🔎The findings of the 2023 #FABLEScenathon are highlighted in the 9th edition of the Sustainable Development Report #SDR by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Pathways for all countries include the Current Trends, National Commitments and Global Sustainability scenarios. 🌱FABLE team Greece - led by #AE4RIA - participated for the first time in 2023 and a summary of the results is available in a separate report. Adhering to national and EU commitments reduces GHG Emissions from Agriculture by 75% compared to Business-as-Usual driven mainly by increased Crop & Livestock productivity and behavioral shift to healthier dietary patterns. The Greek FABLE team is currently working on tailoring built-in scenarios to idiosyncratic characteristics of the Greek Agri-Food system to develop pathways towards net zero by 2050. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/d42MrtVi The pathways for food and land-use systems in #Greece were developed by Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri, Prof. Chrysi Laspidou, Dr. Mariatzela Chatzigiannakou, Dr. Konstantinos Dellis, Dr. Alexandra Ioannou and Dr. Conrad Landis
