We are thrilled to introduce the SDSN Global Climate Hub! 🌐 About Us: The Global Climate Hub functions as a thematic network within the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Our hosting institutions are the Athens University of Economics and Business and the "Athena" Research and Innovation Center, both of which are part of the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria #AE4RIA, an initiative for collaboration between research institutions, innovation accelerators, and science-technology-policy interface networks focused on sustainable development. The Academy of Athens and DTU - Technical University of Denmark, are two of the most important co-founding institutions of the GCH. The chair of the SDSN-GCH is Professor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri. 🌱 Our Focus: The SDSN-GCH consists of nine thematic units that cover in an interlinked fashion a broad spectrum of climate sustainability concerns & needs: Climate Data Platforms and Digital Applications, Climate & Energy Systems Modeling, Climate & Health, Just Transition: Policies, Finance, Labor Market, Education, Training, Upskilling and Reskilling, Atmospheric Physics and Climatology, Climate, Land Use, Water-Food-Energy-Biodiversity Nexus Modeling, Innovation Acceleration for Climate Neutrality and Resilience, Transformative and Participatory Approaches. The works of the units of the GCH is supported by 200 researchers. 💡 Our Mission: The SDSN-GCH collates expertise, knowledge, data, and tools to provide science-based and human-centric pathways toward net zero transformation towards 2050. For successfully treading this way, sophisticated support from advanced digital technologies, complex science modeling, and a holistic multi-module approach are needed, to provide suitable science-based recommendations. The SDSN GCH makes extensive use of data, knowledge, and technologies provided by experts, and couples this with country-specific action plans aiming at their adoption and reinforcement by society. #WCEREA Policy Session on "Climate Change, Land-Use, and Biodiversity: Economic Perspectives" at #EAERE2024, organized by the World Council of Environmental and Resource Economists Association, which I am honored to chair, in collaboration with the other world associations of #environmental and resource #economists (Asian Association of Environmental and Resouce Economics (AAERE), AERE, AFAERE, LAERE, AARES) the session provided a global view on what makes #climate, #biodiversity and #land use policy most effective, for as many as possible, and for as long as possible. Our panel discussion focused on crucial strategies for long-term #biodiversity and land use policies aligned with climate #action. During my speech, I have presented the methodological framework of SDSN Global Climate Hub, which consist of three layers of analysis: First, the #Science layer that develops national dynamic #pathways for the transition to Climate Neutrality and Resilience, by integrating systems analysis of climate, energy, transport, land-use, marine-use, health and socioeconomic mathematical models. Second, the Transformative #Stakeholder #Engagement methods for empowering stakeholders to co-design and localise the science driven pathways. Third the #AI digital infrastructure that collects, aggregates and makes available the needed data, models and tools for open access mode of operation for all stakeholders. 🔎The findings of the 2023 #FABLEScenathon are highlighted in the 9th edition of the Sustainable Development Report #SDR by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Pathways for all countries include the Current Trends, National Commitments and Global Sustainability scenarios. 🌱FABLE team Greece - led by #AE4RIA - participated for the first time in 2023 and a summary of the results is available in a separate report. Adhering to national and EU commitments reduces GHG Emissions from Agriculture by 75% compared to Business-as-Usual driven mainly by increased Crop & Livestock productivity and behavioral shift to healthier dietary patterns. Such an audience! 2000 participants from across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the United States The Climate Reality Project in Rome, alongside former US Vice President Al Gore and esteemed scientists! I truly enjoyed addressing this huge, motivated and knowledgable audience! Thank you President Al Gore for the invitation! During my speech, I mentioned our work in AE4RIA - Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria which involves interdisciplinary projects to promote sustainability through innovation and effective science-policy interaction and I presented the SDSN Global Climate Hub, which I chair, and it is an international research-led initiative for tackling complex sustainability challenges. I highlighted the need for enhanced education, knowledge sharing, and #skills development and shared our collaborative report with Huawei (https://lnkd.in/dxFJN4G2) , which utilized AI-based methodologies to identify crucial skills and occupations necessary for implementing the #Green and #Digital transformation outlined in the #EuropeanGreenDeal. Additionally, I referred to the SDSN Global Climate Hub report (launched at #COP28) “Modeling Net-Zero Pathways: https://lnkd.in/d4NsFF6t" which provides net-zero strategies for each country in the #EU27, the #UK, and the #Balkans and it will now extend to #decarbonization pathways in the #energy sector for selected countries in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region (to be launched at UN Summit of the Future and #COP29). I moderated the session “Growth through Innovation: Southern Europe’s Small and Medium Enterprise Driven Economies” focused on the pivotal role of innovators in driving sustainable #urban transitions. We discussed how technology and innovative governance strategies are catalysts for growth and development. Southern Europe’s SMEs are at the forefront, pioneering sustainable innovations that cut emissions and bolster job creation. Panelists included Cristina Crava, Head of Projects, The Porto Protocol and Rodolfo Pinto, Board Member, Green Energy Storage and we shared strategies to promote #environmental sustainability and enhance job opportunities across Europe, urging businesses to adopt sustainable practices and inspiring innovative #solutions through collaborative networking efforts.

Yesterday, I had the honor of delivering the keynote speech at the "On track to 2030? Delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals in the EU" conference at KBR (Royal Library of Belgium). The event featured welcome remarks from #HerMajestyQueenMathilde, #EuropeanCommissionerEconomy #PaoloGentiloni, and Belgian Federal Minister for Climate, Environment, Sustainable Development, and Green Deal, Khattabi Zakia. Co-organized by European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni and Belgian Federal Minister Zakia Khattabi, this high-level conference aimed to increase political ownership of the #SDGs, review progress, learn from the EU Voluntary Review, and discuss future steps during the “Decade of Action.” The goal was to raise awareness about the importance of #sustainabledevelopment for #EUcitizens. I had the privilege of delivering the keynote address for Session 3, "Follow the Money: Unlocking Tomorrow’s Economy," where I highlighted our work in the “Program on Fraternal Economy of Integral & Sustainable Development” of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences of Vatican. I am excited to announce the launch of the 2024 Sustainable Development Report #SDR2024: The SDGs and the UN Summit of the Future, which I am thrilled to endorse with my signature! The 9th edition includes the SDG Index and Dashboards, providing the most up-to-date data to track and rank the performance of all UN Member States on the #SDGs. This edition also introduces a new Index measuring countries' support for UN-based multilateralism across all 193 UN Member States, alongside new FABLE pathways demonstrating how to achieve sustainable food and land systems by mid-century. Last Wednesday, in the framework of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project, I gave a speech at the "Networking Event of Initiatives and Projects for Adaptation to Climate Change," organized by the Green Fund in collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency Greece (NECCA - ΟΦΥΠΕΚΑ). The event aimed to strengthen networking and cooperation between ongoing projects and initiatives for Greece's adaptation to climate change. In my speech, I highlighted our work at AE4RIA - Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria, which involves #interdisciplinary projects to promote sustainability through innovation and effective science-policy interaction. As one of the largest research networks in sustainable development, our projects and initiatives focus on creating practical solutions for #climateadaptation and fostering collaboration across various sectors to drive impactful change. 💡Some of our EU #research projects focused on climate adaptation include Pathways2Resilience: Co-developing pathways towards climate-resilient regions in Europe,MAIA Resilience EU: Maximizing impact and accessibility of European climate research, MULTICLIMACT Project: Multi-faceted climate adaptation actions to improve resilience, preparedness, and responsiveness of the built environment against multiple hazards at multiple scales. Climate Impetus: Dynamic information management approach for the implementation of climate-resilient adaptation packages in European regions, ARSINOE_EU: Climate-resilient regions through systemic solutions and innovations. Additionally, I referred to the UN SDSN Global Climate Hub report (launched at #COP28), “Modeling Net-Zero Pathways: https://lnkd.in/d4NsFF6t" which provides net-zero strategies for each country in the EU-27, the UK, and the Balkans and it will now extend to decarbonization pathways in the energy sector for selected countries in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region (to be launched at #COP29).
