About us

The Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics & Turbomachinery (LFMT) was established in 1985 and it is part of the Energy Department of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The facilities of LFMT cover an area of 400m2 (laboratory and office facilities). The LFMT laboratory infrastructures include high and low speed wind tunnels of both open and close type, for high-quality experimental flow and heat transfer measurements on wings, turbomachinery blades (stationary or moving), heat exchangers and various other flow devices models. LFMT is equipped with high accuracy measurement instruments, such as Laser Doppler and Hot-wire anemometry, data acquisitions and analysis systems, especially for turbulent flows where cross- and auto-correlations are of high importance. LFMT is specialized on measurements for transitional flows on flat plates, wings and blades. Recently, LFMT has initiated the construction of a test-rig for noise measurements. LFMT is equipped with CPU power capable of massive computations for the numerical modeling of complex flow problems. LFMT has two clusters of 22 and 16 processors for High Performance Computing. LFMT has developed a full 3D Navier-Stokes parallelized and vectorized computer code for the solution of incompressible, compressible (up to M=6) laminar or turbulent flow problems, incorporating the most advanced Reynolds-stress turbulence models and all the eddy-viscosity models, linear and non-linear, used by the aeronautics industry. Currently, LFMT has started developing an in-house code for Large Eddy Simulation. LFMT has also licenses for the most modern commercial CFD software for the simulation of industrial flow problems.
