⛰️Those of you who were at Frasta, Tzoumerka, on Saturday, September 21, honoured us with your presence at the local ceremony for our Europa Nostra Award. For those who couldn’t make it, we’re sharing here thoughts and snapshots from this very important day of our challenging but deeply rewarding journey between being in place and on the road! 🗣️Saturday morning found us in the company of friends, collaborators and members of the local community, exploring the historic cobbled path restored by our team in 2019 as part of the 'KalderimiX2' project and recently distinguished with the European Prize of Architecture Philippe Rotthier. Afterwards and by the Plaka Bridge, we discussed the present and "cooked up" ideas for the future of traditional building techniques in Greece guided by the pivotal insights of Eleftheria Tsakanika, @Ioanna Tzavara and Elena Mamani. 🏆After our lunch break, we gathered at 7:00 p.m. at the old Elementary School of Frasta, the roof of which we are currently restoring within the framework of our educational program ‘Tsiati’. As dusk fell over Tzoumerka, greetings were extended also by Alekos Kachrimanis, Governor of Epirus, Christos Chasiakos, Mayor of Central Tzoumerka, and Ioannis Senteles, former Mayor of Northern Tzoumerka. In an emotional atmosphere filled with pride, we were presented with the honorary plaque by Mrs. Lydia Karra, president of ELLINIKI ETAIREIA Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ΕΛΛΕΤ) as representative of Europa Nostra in Greece. The day ended with a traditional, Epirotic fest to the tunes of the band Matzounia—of course, we all danced together until dawn! 🙏🏼We extend our warmest thanks to all the speakers of the roundtable, to the distinguished guests, as well as, of course, to all the partners, donors, sponsors, organisations, and members of the local communities who have supported us throughout our journey. 🏘️We hope that those of you who celebrated with us enjoyed it as much as we did, and we wholeheartedly thank you for your presence. We also hope that this is just the beginning of more such distinctions for us, something that can happen only with your continued support and active participation. Creative Skills Week Satellite Event: “The Future of European Built Heritage Crafts” 📅 Friday, 20 September 🕒 13:00 – 14:30 CEST Future for Religious Heritage (FRH) and Mad'in Europe have conducted a Europe-wide study on built heritage craft skills, focusing on education, certification, practice, and the transmission of skills to future generations. The study targeted: • Craftspeople in heritage conservation • Architects, curators, conservation surveyors, engineers, and heritage building owners • Schools and craft training institutions The online event will reveal the study’s findings and feature key speakers representing the focus groups: -Georgia Cristea, Conservation Architect and Education Manager at INTBAU Romania -Panos Kostoulas, Architect and founding member of Boulouki -Dominic Taylor, UK craftsman and external expert with Boulouki -Rodolphe de Looz-Corswarem, former Executive President of the European Historic Houses Association, a role he held for 8 years, and continues to serve as a Board and Executive Committee member. ⚒️ Scaffolding is up, and the 'Tsiati' of Frasta School is being transformed! The first week of the apprenticeship, which is part of our ongoing dual educational program "Tsiati | Apprenticeship and Hands-on Workshop on Traditional Timber Construction Techniques", has successfully concluded. 🏠 The restoration and renovation work on the roof of the Frasta School—the new research and educational facility being developed by Boulouki in Epirus—began on Monday, September 2, under great weather conditions and with the energised attitude of all participants. Under the guidance of the expert craftsmen-trainers Tryfon Papaioannou and Dominic Taylor, the apprentices actively participated in the removal of the ceilings and roof tiles, as well as in the installation of the mezzanine beams. 👷🏽♀️ The ‘Tsiati’ program consists of an apprenticeship for new craftspeople-carpenters (September 2–27) and a 12-day hands-on workshop (September 16–27), aiming to enable a total of 26 participants from Greece and abroad to contribute to the restoration of the School in Frasta. 📢Here’s to a new and substantial distinction for Boulouki! 🏆We have the incredible honour to be one of this year’s winners of the PHILIPPE ROTTHIER 2024 XIV Prix Européen d’Architecture Vernaculaire / PHILIPPE ROTTHIER XIV European Architecture Prize 2024 on the theme of “vernacular architecture”. 📋After examining the 189 international projects submitted on the basis of their links with vernacular architecture, the 11-membered jury, under the watchful eye of Philippe Rotthier, announced on the 29th of June 2024 the winners; among them, our project « Kalderimi X2 » was awarded the ‘Prize for Integration into the Landscape’. 🏘️By ‘vernacular architecture’, the prize describes the architecture that is the product of long historical sedimentation and which, in the natural landscape, seems to be the very fruit of geology. This year, the jury paid particular attention to the projects that fulfilled various and specific criteria, ranging from being locally based to aiming to integrate architecture into a rural or urban context, avoid disruption and provocation, and, as far as possible, use natural materials and traditional, environmentally-friendly techniques. 🏅The award ceremony shall take place in the presence of the winners and eminent guests in Brussels on 26 October 2024. Moreover, the projects of the winners and nominees will be exhibited at La Loge in Brussels and at the Béguinage in Bruges from 26 October to 10 November 2024. 🤝🏼The project «Kalderimi X2» was realised with the collaboration of the Municipality of North Tzoumerka, the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka, the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Technical Chamber of Greece - Department of Western Macedonia, under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture - Region of Epirus and with the support of The Headley Trust, AEGEAS NGO and the Metsovion Interdisciplinary Research Center of NTUA.
