Kicking off the 2024 Science, Technology, and Society #STSForum in Kyoto with the Regional Action on Climate Change Symposium #RACC16, where I am honored to serve as a member of the International Advisory Committee. The RACC-16 discussions focused on #climatechange, the #oceans and their physical and #biosystems, #marinefoods under stress, and ocean impacts on #humanhealth. Other key topics included critically threatened populations and potential solutions, the economics of ocean impacts, loss and damage, and responses, as well as monitoring and governing the oceans for sustainable regional #resilience. Our plenary session on "Economics of Ocean Impacts, Loss and Damage, and Responses," chaired by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Former VP of the World Bank and Founding Director Emeritus of the Library of Alexandria, focused on the significant role oceans play in regulating the earth's climate and the detrimental effects of human activities on #marineecosystems. Global warming and sea-level rise #SLR were major concerns, particularly for Small Island Developing States #SIDS and coastal delta communities. There is a pressing need for a more comprehensive, holistic approach to evaluating the costs and benefits of human activities on the oceans. Our panel, comprising experts on ocean and climate interactions- Prof. Adel El-Beltagy (Ain Shams University), Dr. Richard Damania (World Bank), Mr. Guntur Sutiyono (Climateworks Centre, Indonesia), and Prof. Cherry Murray (University of Arizona & Harvard)- provided insights into how we can improve our relationship with oceans and adapt our #economicmodels to prioritize the health of marine ecosystems. During my speech, I highlighted the SDSN Global Climate Hub's modeling suite, sea use, and ecosystem services modeling, #SDR reports on progress towards #SDG6, the economic valuation vs SDG performance, the skills required to support the #BlueTransition, and proposed the need for a socio- economics layer in ocean digital twins, on which my team AE4RIA - Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria, is working on. The #RACC International Advisory Committee will release its 2024 statement soon.
