SPAW-RAC SMALL GRANTS New call for projects 2024-2025 😀 We are delighted to open the new season for the call for projects. Thanks to all the organizations and their outstanding work in the field, the 2023 season was a success. Some projects are still underway, and we wish them every success ! The main objective of this new call for projects is to implement the SPAW Protocol by encouraging concrete actions for biodiversity conservation in the countries and territories of the Greater Caribbean Region. For this call for projects, particular attention will be paid to projects carried out in countries and territories that are signatories to the SPAW protocol, as well as in territories that do not easily benefit from traditional funding. Projects involving collaboration between one or more Caribbean territories will also be given priority. Initiatives involving marine/terrestrial fauna and flora species listed in the SPAW protocol appendices will be appreciated, although this does not rule out other proposals. Projects providing for medium-term (2-5 years) and/or long-term ( 5 years) monitoring of effectiveness will be favored in the analysis of proposals. About us
The Caribbean Sea is singular due to its enclosed position, its particular biodiveristy, its numerous islands and therefore its different people and culture. This Sea provides innumerable benefits to human populations, mainly as food supply and touristic revenues. To ensure their future, it is necessary for Caribbean territories to act as a body to preserve this environment. Therefore, the Cartagena Convention, which is the only legally restrictive regional agreement on the environment, was adopted in 1983 and is ratified by 26 Caribbean countries. Its secretariat is ensured by the Regional Coordination Unit for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEnvironment-RCU) and is established at Kingston (Jamaica). It is supported by three protocols that respectively deal with 1. Oil Spills, 2. Biodiversity (SPAW) and 3. Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities (LBS). The protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife in the Wider Caribbean Region (SPAW) was adopted on 18 January 1990 and entered into fore a decade later, on 18 June 2000. It is ratified by 17 countries (which represents more that 30 territories). SPAW protocol gathers 32 protected areas, mainly marine. The protocol is also accompanied with three appendices which list 1. Strictly protected species of flora, 2. Strictly protected species of fauna and 3. Species of flora or fauna with regulation of exploitation issues. SPAW-RAC is based at DEAL of Guadeloupe, Basse-Terre (France). Principal SPAW-RAC mission is to implement the SPAW protocol across the Wider Caribbean Region. To achieve that, it gathers protected areas, helps to create new ones and helps to their management through training workshops for instance. It also review the species listed under the appendices. Furthermore SPAW-RAC can create, conduct or assist various environmental projects. It also participates to different scaled meetings to broadcast information and knowledge about the Caribbean environmental issues.

CALL FOR DATA - GCRMN-Caribbean & Global Report The GCRMN Call for Data for the Caribbean and Global report was launched 2 months ago today and ends soon: September 30! 10 years after the last regional report in the Caribbean, it's time to assess the state of our coral reefs again. For the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), 2024 is a crucial year as we collect data for two reports updates: ● The regional "Status of Caribbean Coral Reefs: 1970-2012" report (Jackson et al, 2014) ● The global "Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2020" report (Souter et al., 2021) The GCRMN is an operational network of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) aiming to provide the best available scientific information on the status and trends of coral reef ecosystems for their conservation and management. The GCRMN collates and presents coral reef data, aggregating from national to regional levels, and then to a global level. If you are interested in collaborating on these new assessments, you will find all the information needed to the data contributors in the SPAW-RAC website in English - Spanish or French. Here: https://lnkd.in/eaujHCQY ⏰ -> Data are expected by September 30. Don't hesitate to share and relay this call for data in your networks. The more data we have, the clearer the picture of our coral reefs will be. How can New Space technologies be used to preserve the ocean? This was the question posed by researchers, economists and politcs at the second edition of the Ocean Space Forum that was organized by Prométhée Earth Intelligence, the French National Center for Space Studies (CNES), and the Government of Monaco (Space Affairs Office) on Tuesday, 2nd July 2024, at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. SPAW RAC was delighted to participate to the roundtable : "NewSpace transcending borders to foster environmental protection" and bring exemple of the Caribbean to explore concrete solutions for preserving the Ocean and its resources for future generations that could be developped thanks to the New Space Technologies, to face Sargassum invasion, to monitor coral reefs, or migratory species monitoring. SPAW RAC SMALL GRANTS: Focus on Big fish Initiatives's podcasts In 2021, CAR SPAW allocated a small grant to The Big Fish Initiative through the SCRFA organization for a highly original project to raise awareness of species protection through radio communication. The specific objectives of this project were to inform mariners and fishing-dependent communities about the protection of reef fish and to encourage them to take account of aggregations periods in the fishing calendar in order to preserve the renewal of species, in particular the Nassau-grouper and the Snapper-grouper. Over 3 years this participatory campaign and project called "Big Fish Radio" took place in Belize, then in the Bahamas, and in view of its success was then developed and implemented throughout the Caribbean. The podcasts and PSAs were broadcasted during the spawning seasons of Nassau grouper and mutton snapper in Belize and The Bahamas. Additionally, partners of the Big Fish Initiative in English speaking countries distributed the Radio kit through their respective channels and social media platforms. The podcasts and PSAs were also distributed by fishers of the Big Fish Network thought their WhatsApp groups. Bleaching alert on coral reefs for this summer, more precise forecasts from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration in the Coral Reef Watch bulletin. This subject will be covered in the GCRMN-Caribbean report on the state of coral reefs coordinated by SPAW-RAC. We are currently collecting data on the state of the reefs! #ForCoral
🪸The latest issue of the Caribbean Coral Reef Watch bulletin (June 2024) is now available #ForCoral Bleaching Alert-level 2️⃣ conditions are present in the SW Caribbean along Costa Rica 🇨🇷 , Panama 🇵🇦 , and Nicaragua 🇳🇮. Bleaching Alert-level 1️⃣ is present along the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), S. Belize, E. Panama, a stretch of Columbia , and SW Cuba. ⚠ A Bleaching Warning persists in the NW and SE Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Leeward islands, Nearshore Venezuela, La Guajira ❗NOTE: NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration CRW is currently updating its satellite-based Regional Virtual Stations, to include the revised #coralbleaching heat stress category system (with new Alert Levels 3-5). While this work continues, if a gauge on an individual Regional Virtual Station page registers Alert Level 2 as the “Current Coral Bleaching Alert Level”, NOAA highly recommend users do the following: ➡ click on the gray Degree Heating Week button above the map; ➡ view the Two-year Time Series graph directly below the map image; and/or ( ➡ click on the link to the Time series data, located below both the map and Time Series graph. Doing this will allow a user to see the actual accumulated heat stress level (which may be above Alert Level 2). Download the bulletin: https://lnkd.in/eUbn2z5M
