At the GNOME Mobile hackfest we discussed what the most important high-level issues across the platform are, and what it would take for more of us to daily drive it.

App platform

• Adaptive dialogs / bottom sheets
• Insets
• System/portal dialogs
• File chooser
• Keyboard shortcuts replacement / command palette

Shell

• Smaller quick settings / no whitespace in notification drawer
• Log in screen with proper PIN unlock
• De-empthasize Emergency button on the lock screen
• Rounded corners on app cards
• New notification API
• Expanded MPRIS widget with flexible per-app buttons
• Kill airplane mode, have a modem-only toggle instead
• Support >6 character passwords
• Flag for numeric/non-numeric passwords
• Transparent panel / inverted text color on light wallpapers

Portals

• Contacts Portal (storing searching contacts, replace Folks)
• Wakeup Portal
• Fix GNOME Online Accounts

Infrastructure

• Push notifications

If we want to cover certain niches/very closed apps there's probably no way around Android integration (e.g. Waydroid) medium term:

• MPRIS
• Proper multitasking
• No system controls
• Host keyboard
