I don't think I've seen anything like this when using jupyter_core 5.3.1.

This is what I get when using jupyter_core 5.3.2 patched with jupyter/jupyter_core#367:

After updating jupyter_core to 5.4.0, the behaviour is the same. One or two tests fail each time, not always the same. OTOH using jupyter_core 5.3.1 I ran the testsuite several times without failure.

Some tests that fail:

  • FAILED tests/test_kernelspecapp.py::test_kernelspec_app - pytest.PytestUnraisableExceptionWarning: Exception ignored in: <socket.sock...
  • ERROR tests/test_kernelspec.py::KernelSpecTests::test_validate_kernel_name - pytest.PytestUnraisableExceptionWarning: Exception ignored in: <socket.sock...
  • FAILED tests/test_kernelmanager.py::TestParallel::test_start_parallel_process_kernels[tcp] - pytest.PytestUnraisableExceptionWarning: Exception ignored in: <socket.sock...
  • FAILED tests/test_multikernelmanager.py::TestKernelManager::test_start_sequence_tcp_kernels - pytest.PytestUnraisableExceptionWarning: Exception ignored in: <socket.sock...
  • FAILED tests/test_kernelmanager.py::TestAsyncKernelManager::test_signal_kernel_subprocesses - pytest.PytestUnraisableExceptionWarning: Exception ignored in: <socket.sock...

Still failing with jupyter_core 5.4.0 and jupyter_client 8.4.0.

All tests pass with jupyter_core 5.3.1 and jupyter_client 8.4.0.
