Herdtools --------- Simplified user-level management of a "herd" of machines --------- The Herdtools are a set of Perl scripts which perform various "job parallel" functions so that you can control a "herd", or cluster, of machines from one connection. In most cases, the Herdtools use rsh or ssh to actually do the work for you; in other cases, they may connect to Rob Brown's procstatd to collect some information; in still other cases, they may simply read a file on disk and report information back to you. In any event, the idea is to provide a consistent interface for selecting relevant groups of machines: all machines in the "cow" cluster, or all machines that have F90 compilers, or all machines except those with the "mem512" tag. cl_hosts prints the list of hosts that will be used cl_exec run a command, in parallel, on multiple machines cl_sig sends a signal to all named programs on multiple machines cl_kill sends the KILL signal to all names programs on mult machines cl_cp copies a file from a global file-space to a local file-space cl_ipcs shows Unix IPC items on remote machines cl_ipcrm cleans up Unix IPC items on remote machines cl_sudo run a command, in parallel, on multiple machines as super-user cl_ps contacts the remote procstatd to perform a ps cl_proc contacts the remote procstatd and dumps all info cl_quik contacts the remote procstatd and gets some quick info cl_stat prints the current cluster status (from webwatchd) cl_motd prints the motd for the cluster webwatchd periodically connects to all procstatd's and dumps info to a web page kick_web can be used to give webwatchd a "kick" and re-connect to the machines cl_bcast EXPERIMENTAL: copies a file to remote machines using a binary tree broadcast dirsync EXPERIMENTAL: intelligently copies the files in a directory to remote machines; only copies changed files cl_multirun EXPERIMENTAL: intelligently runs a command on multiple input data sets on multiple machines 30 January 2002, John Pormann, Duke University, [email protected]
