The search engine's main goal is to discover your site so that it can return search results to its users. However, this can take time. If you're really popular, it will happen faster. But usually people prefer fast results. To do this, you need to tell the search engine that your site exists. When you do this, search engines usually collect and provide some useful information about your site.

Additionally, I am curious about the webmaster_verifications section of the _config.yml file

For this reason, they ask you to prove that you are the owner of this particular website. This is verified by placing verification codes that you link to.
