Terminal.app in dark mode still reports a light terminal background if the original theme (sans dark mode) had a light background. As a result, Markdown is rendered using dark text on dark background.
This feels like a bug in Terminal.app and I'm not sure what the appropriate solution would be.
A workaround can be achieved using shell configuration files: #1743 (comment). You will need to restart your shell session after toggling dark mode in macOS.
