What is SkyOS?

SkyOS is a custom ROM for KaiOS-powered phones.

Originally, the ROM was developed for the Nokia 800 Tough, but now it also supports other devices.

Why SkyOS? What are the differences between SkyOS and stock KaiOS?

KaiOS has tremendous potential—it's a browser-based system, making it easy to develop apps for. It's also a smart, feature-rich system originally designed for classic phones with physical keyboards, making it well-suited for such devices.

With the support of major companies in the classic phone industry, like Nokia, it initially seemed that Nokia was poised for a comeback.

However, some mistakes were made:

  • The system is quite slow.
  • The system has limitations, such as difficulties in sideloading applications.
  • The system is burdened with bloatware and advertisements.
  • It appears that Nokia and KaiOS are often at odds with the community, rather than supporting it. While blocking security loopholes is necessary, attempting to restrict the device excessively raises concerns.

Because of these issues, our goal is to revitalize Nokia and develop a more user-friendly ROM. We are working to enhance device speed by replacing stock apps with faster alternatives, thoroughly cleaning up the system, removing bloatware, and implementing various speed optimizations.

Regarding the "locking" of the system, it's a complex matter. We provide a rooted boot.img and a modified recovery.img, but our ultimate aim is full accessibility—enabling users to sideload apps directly from the device's file explorer, among other features. We also utilize AdAway hosts to block ads.
