👋 Meet Gifty Omari-Mensah, Newmont's first female non-expatriate Senior Scheduling Engineer.  In her newly appointed role, Gifty is not only the first female non-expatriate but also the first female manager with Ahafo South's Subika Underground mine in Ghana! Gifty Mariam Omari-Mensah's journey is truly inspiring. As a female mining engineer, she has faced several challenges throughout her career with unwavering determination and resilience. Since joining Newmont at our Ahafo operation in Ghana, Gifty has showcased her expertise, including contributing to the drill and blast designs for the Subika Underground operation and implementing the sublevel shrinkage mining method as a Medium-Term Planning Engineer. And her impact extends far beyond her engineering role at Newmont. On 23rd May, 2024 Newmont Ghana, Ahafo South Mine in collaboration with the Women and Allies (W&A) Business Resource Group embarked on a trip dubbed "Read to Inspire" to the Ahafo Kenyasi No_1 Methodist and Roman Catholic Basic schools. This initiative aimed at establishing rapport, friendship and providing guidance specifically tailored towards young females to consider STEM courses in their fields of study and career choices. During the session, remarkable females shared their insights, experiences and opportunities for females in STEM to empower and inspire the students to take their studies serious. We also delivered some items such as pens, books, school bags, drinks, biscuits, drawing and writing aids, etc, to support their studies. I firmly believe that learning from these experiences is valuable and will help us to embrace our own challenges navigating through this field. I'll extend my utmost gratitude to the Leadership, the entire team and sponsors of the W&A group for this initiative and the opportunity to interact with some of the students. Currently female participation in the large scale mining sector of Ghana is estimated at around 10% of the workforce. Issues around female participation includes lack of skilled-female workers and their retention once they enter the mining workforce among other issues. In situations where there’s economic instability if families have to choose which child to keep supporting for advanced education usually invariably it would be the male child. This is therefore a very important step. Women in Mining Ghana has been advocating for the participation and support for the pipeline of female talent . Today we are celebrating the launch of this scholarship initiative funded by MIIF. An awesome 🙌🏾 project and we hope that all girls in communities affected by mining will be impacted positively by this initiative. Their insights into how we can make the mining industry more environmentally friendly and socially responsible were truly enlightening. It was empowering to connect with so many passionate professionals dedicated to advancing sustainability in mining. Together, we are paving the way for a more equitable and sustainable future in the industry. Thank you to the WIM President Georgette B. As we start a new week, remember that every day is a chance to start again, to improve, and to grow. Don't let yesterday's struggles define today's success. You are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. Believe in yourself, your strengths, and your abilities. Take things one step at a time, focus on the present moment, and know that every small step leads to big progress. Have a great week
