📍 The Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) organises Stakeholder Engagement to Address Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) 📍 The RAIL convened a stakeholder engagement event on 27th  June 2024 at the RWESCK Auditorium. The stakeholder engagement event successfully gathered valuable input, user testing & feedback, and perspectives from key stakeholders on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (#AI) to develop a comprehensive toolbox aimed at supporting victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) and gender-based violence. The engagement saw active participation from representatives of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), the Department of Social Welfare, the Department of Children, civil societies, individuals and the KNUST Counselling Unit. Dr. RITA Udor presented the initial challenges faced by Boame App, introduced by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), which eventually became dysfunctional. These challenges provided critical lessons for the development of the new AI toolbox. Dr. Udor explained the objective of the current project, emphasising its importance in filling the gaps left by previous initiatives like the Boame App. The new project aimed to leverage AI to provide more robust, scalable, and user-friendly support to victims of IPV and gender-based violence. Other project team members are Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Dr. Eric Tutu Tchao, Dr. Eunice Akyereko Adjei and Ms. Christiana Aggor. Data Upskilling for Africans by Africans: #RAIL's Perspective on Ethical Inclusion In an era where data is the new gold, data practitioners' ethical management and upskilling are paramount. On May 31, 2024, this principle was the focal point of an enlightening presentation by Ing. Dr. Henry Nunoo-Mensah, PE-GhIE, Programmes Coordinator and AI in Health Thematic Lead for the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL). Speaking at a Data Upskilling for Africans-by-Africans workshop organised by Panoply Digital Ltd in Rwanda as part of the 17th eLearning-Africa Conference, Dr. Nunoo-Mensah delivered an insightful discourse on "Data Upskilling from an Ethical Lens," shedding light on the imperative of ethical considerations in data science and AI. Dr. Nunoo-Mensah began by emphasising the significance of data upskilling for success and productivity in today's data-centric world. As data increasingly drives decision-making across various sectors, the need for skilled professionals who can navigate this landscape ethically has never been more critical. He underscored that viewing data upskilling through an ethical lens is essential to ensure that individuals and organisations handle data responsibly and ethically. The contributions of other notable speakers, including Annita Mwagiru, Yaovi Habib and Lazare Houndekindo, spoke on the need for a relevant partnership to deliver demand-driven data upskilling programmes relevant to various organisations. Omeed Mosavat, from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, presented on e-learning for data upskilling. The session was moderated by Ronda Železný-Green, PhD Zelezny-Green, Co-founder and Director at Panoply Digital Ltd, who facilitated a robust discussion on the intersection of data, ethics, and innovation. As the dialogue around data ethics evolves, initiatives like the Data Upskilling for Africans-by-Africans program play a vital role in shaping a future where data is used responsibly. Dr. Nunoo-Mensah’s insights and the FACETS framework offer a guiding light for individuals and organisations committed to ethical data practices. By prioritising fairness, accountability, confidentiality, ethics, transparency, and safety, we can build a data-driven world that is not only advanced but also equitable and trustworthy. We're thrilled to share our recent success in bridging the skills gap in research and data analysis, affirming our commitment to quality education. Building on the success of our inaugural 2023 workshop, we hosted the second edition—a comprehensive 2-day workshop focused on Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) in Research and Data Analysis. This workshop, held from May 24-25, 2024, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was organized in partnership with the Social Sciences Society and the Responsible AI Lab of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. Themed "Empowering Data Literacy: Leveraging SPSS & Ethical AI for Effective Research and Data Analysis," the 2024 workshop aimed to empower participants with the skills to effectively use SPSS, Data Analysis, ethical use of AI in research and how to master academic writing in their academic, research, and professional endeavours. Over 500 attendees benefited from interactive sessions, hands-on exercises, and expert-led discussions facilitated by esteemed professionals, including Ing. Dr. Henry Nunoo-Mensah, PE-GhIE, Master Godfred Badu (Teaching Assistant of John-Paul S. Banchani), and Master Philos Habib. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our partners, team members, volunteers, sponsors, and media partners for their crucial roles in making this event a success. We're especially grateful to our Founder, Prince Dormenyo and the entire KNUST community for their unwavering support. Together, we are shaping the future of data literacy and research excellence, making a lasting impact. Photo credit: Gilbert Akyen #QualityEducation #Impact #Research #SPSS #KNUST #DataAnalysis

Leveraging #Responsible AI for #Climate Action in #Africa 🔥 In celebration of African Union Day on Saturday, May 25, 2024, the African Technology and Innovation Institutes (ATII) organised the African Day 2024 webinar. The event, themed "Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Climate Action in Africa," provided a virtual platform for participants across the continent to discuss the far-reaching effects of climate change and its specific impact on Africa. Guiding the panel session with her expertise, Dr. Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua, a Professor of Engineering and the Founder of ATII, posed a crucial question: How can Africa harness the power of AI to combat climate change and position itself as a global leader in climate action? Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of the Responsible AI Lab and Co-founder of the Responsible AI Network - Africa - TUM/KNUST, emphasised the need for intentionality and planning in Africa's climate action efforts. He called for the development of national AI strategies by all countries and the formulation of an African Union (AU) AI strategy focused on climate action. Prof. Kponyo highlighted the importance of local funding for research institutes to curate Afrocentric datasets and stressed the necessity of collaboration between government agencies, industries, and academia in addressing climate change. He also underscored the importance of developing curricula to fill skill gaps and enhance digital competencies for the next generation. He advocated building capacity and awareness for emerging technologies across formal and informal sectors and suggested integrating AI and robotics into basic education. He referenced the RAIL Robotics Club initiative for Junior and Senior High Schools as a practical step in this direction. "The future belongs to those who can navigate through the digital space, so let's keep building capacity," he remarked. Mr. John Kamara, CEO of Adanian Labs and Chair of the AI Center of Excellence Africa (AICE Africa) discussed the need for Africa to choose the right approach to combating climate change, whether through adaptation or mitigation. He highlighted the importance of collecting conceptual data on the continent and developing human resource capacity. Mr. Karmara stressed the necessity of reengineering the African mindset, investing in research and development, and fostering a culture of innovation to drive policy. Mrs. Nela Duke Ekpenyong, Co-founder of LEGA.C Capital, echoed the sentiment of building capacity and investing in human resources. She emphasised the need to allocate resources for innovation as a primary approach to addressing climate change and its impact on Africa. 📎 https://lnkd.in/eBREYkBb #responsibleai #climateaction #innovation #sustainability
