Today, H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the #AfCFTA Secretariat, met with Dr. Joy Kategekwa, Director of the Regional Integration Coordination Office at the African Development Bank, and her team of Regional Integration Experts at the Africa Trade House to discuss strengthening collaboration between the Secretariat and the Bank for effective utilization of the One #Africa Market. Welcoming the new Director, the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for @AfDB support and assured her of the Secretariat’s full support. The Secretary-General highlighted key priority areas of focus: digital infrastructure to implement #AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol, support for women and youth through @AfDB #Youth Entrepreneurship Investment Bank, trade-supporting infrastructure, mobilizing private sector & implementation of country level programs.

About us
African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a flagship project of Agenda 2063 of the African Union — Africa’s own development vision. It was approved by the 18th ordinary Session of Assembly of Heads of State and Government, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in January 2012 which adopted the decision to establish a Continental Free Trade Area. This initiative whose immediate implementation would provide quick wins, impact on socio-economic development and enhance confidence and the commitment of Africans as the owners and drivers of Agenda 2063. The AfCFTA aims at accelerating intra-African trade and boosting Africa’s trading position in the global market by strengthening Africa’s common voice and policy space in global trade negotiations.As at 5 February 2021, 36 countries have deposited their instruments of ratification., 36 countries have ratified the AfCFTA agreement. The general objectives of the AfCFTA are to: Create a single market for goods, services, facilitated by movement of persons in order to deepen the economic integration of the African continent and in accordance with the Pan African Vision of “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa” enshrined in Agenda 2063; Create a liberalised market for goods and services through successive rounds of negotiations; Contribute to the movement of capital and natural persons and facilitate investments building on the initiatives and developments in the State Parties and RECs; Lay the foundation for the establishment of a Continental Customs Union at a later stage; Promote and attain sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development, gender equality and structural transformation of the State Parties; Enhance the competitiveness of the economies of State Parties within the continent and the global market; Promote industrial development through diversification and regional value chain development, agricultural development and food security; and Resolve the challenges of multiple and overlapping memberships

Today, the Secretary General of the #AfCFTA Secretariat, H.E. Wamkele Mene, received the Minister of #Trade and #Industry of #Singapore who paid a courtesy call to the AfCFTA Secretariat. The discussion centred on the #digital economy, #climate finance and trade related capacity building, including knowledge transfer and mutual exchange of experiences. The Minister presented his country's various initiatives in these areas, on the African continent. The exchanges considered the changing landscape of international economic relations that necessitates new ways of conceptualising #global economic #architecture. Strides achieved by African countries in the adoption of digital trade protocol were commended as presenting #investment opportunities for the continent and providing direct opportunities to Africa's #SMEs and startups.

The #AfCFTA and @NEPAD_Agency signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA), in Accra, Ghana. The LoA aims to deepen the collaboration between the 2 institutions in their work with stakeholders to foster acceleration in the implementation of the AfCFTA. The partnership aims to focus on; - AfCFTA Impact Assessment - Supply/Value Chains - Trade Facilitation - Infrastructure - MSMEs - Private Sector Engagement , among others.

The AfCFTA Secretariat, AUDA NEPAD & Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have launched a Guide for Country Impact Assessments on Accelerated Industrial Development for Africa (AIDA) & the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This guide serves as a practical tool for national, regional, and continental authorities, offering best-practice assessment methods and indicators for evaluating the impact of AIDA and the AfCFTA. The Federal Republic of Nigeria held a symbolic ribbon cutting ceremony under the #AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative (GTI). This momentous occasion marked a significant milestone in the country's efforts to trade under the AfCFTA preferences. The event witnessed the presence of key stakeholders from both the government and private sector who participated and contributed meaningful discussions to the outcomes of the ceremony. The #AfCFTA Secretariat embarked on a Guided Trade Initiative (GTI) mission to Praia, Cape Verde. Following a two-day capacity-building workshop focused on ensuring national stakeholders effectively utilise AfCFTA instruments, the delegation engaged with the vibrant and diverse private sector. The mission included site visits to companies in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, beverages, and digital services, where entrepreneurs expressed their eagerness to benefit from the AfCFTA. During the International Africa Development Forum, H.E. Wamkele Mene and Mr. Mohamed El Kettani, Chairman and CEO of the Attijariwafa bank group, signed an MoU aimed at accelerating the impacts of the #AfCFTA and facilitate trade and investment on the African Continent.
