In March 2024, the EU adopted the AI Act, establishing a comprehensive framework for AI regulation. This landmark legislation positions Europe as a leader in ethical AI development. However, there are concerns about overly strict regulations potentially hindering innovation, with fears that Europe might fall behind the US and China, who represent different ends of the AI spectrum. The act is subject to much debate. Is it a good or a bad thing? During my presentation at the Vlaamse overheid, only 7% believed Europe is too strict on AI. Where do you position yourself? The banking industry has faced numerous turbulences episodes - financial ups & downs, return of inflation, rapidly increasing interest rates, threaten systemic banks within Europe - yet, it still has to face deep transformation to be able to survive : - Leverage GenAI to innovate and reinvent customer relationship, take into considerations climate risks in all its activities, - Shift business models to match customer expectations and regulatory changes; - Strengthen resilience capabilities in quickly changing macro-economic conditions and geopolitical environment. In line with past year, 2024 banks must continue to tackle heightened cybersecurity threats, more demanding regulations and strong competition from FinTechs and financing players that are more agile, better in data sourcing/management and benefit from a modernized regulatory framework. The stakes include high constraints on maintaining operational efficiency/profitability and customer trust while fostering innovation. In France, the production of home loans in April 2024 rebounded significantly with an increase of 29%* (source: Fédération Banque Française) compared to March 2024. We anticipate for the year to come a greater financial inclusion, the development of personalized services integrating ESG, and the reinforcement of risk management strategies to navigate economic volatility, technological disruptions and climate change impacts. Recently, I gave a presentation with my colleague Hans Borghgraef and Dominiek Henckaerts from Multimedi at the AI Inspiration Day Vlaamse overheid on the impact of AI on people and society. We had some fascinating discussions on several key considerations surrounding AI, which I would like to share with you. Over the next weeks, I'll post our thoughts on each of these statements, along with feedback from the audience. I’d like to hear your thoughts on these, so feel free to comment. The first statement is very topical, as thousands of students are currently studying for their exams.
