Stats at Fashion Week Show Repeated Outcome: Large Sizes Don’t Make it Past Runway This season’s fashion week has us reflecting on last year’s runway to benchmark if change was being made in the industry. In last year's Spring 2023 Fashion Month, spanning New York, London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks, we witnessed a dynamic industry still loomed by a significant issue: size diversity. According to InStyle's survey, size ranges across brands for this season's global Fashion Week schedule revealed a concerning trend: of 327 industry-approved designers, only 9% offer sizes 20 and above. That is only 30 brands in total, and just 22 in New York. This neglects the average American woman, typically between sizes 16 and 18. Additionally, a vast 70% of designers limit their offerings to size 12 or smaller, just as with previous NYFW-focused findings. These insights demonstrate how while runway diversity is celebrated, many brands don't extend to retail, providing extended sizes only for select items. Is height-inclusive fashion for those under 5ft the next big revolution, following in the footsteps of plus-size fashion? The landscape of height-inclusive fashion for individuals under 5ft is at a crossroads that feels reminiscent of where plus-size fashion stood a decade or two ago. Back then, the industry largely overlooked the needs of plus-size individuals, failing to recognise the demand for stylish, well-fitting clothing that catered to their unique body types. Feedback was often that sizes weren’t big enough, the clothing wasn’t stylish enough, and that plus size models were still being neglected. Fast forward to today, and the plus-size fashion scene has undergone a remarkable transformation. Nearly every brand now offers options for sizes 20 and up, reflecting a shift in both consumer demand and industry awareness. It's a testament to the power of advocacy, representation, and the undeniable truth that fashion should be inclusive of all body types. Similarly, the under-5ft community is facing a similar struggle for recognition and representation. The mainstream fashion industry has been slow to acknowledge the specific needs of shorter individuals, resulting in a lack of options that truly cater to this demographic. People under 5ft are currently shopping in the childrens aisle, or footing the hefty alterations bill to reconstruct their clothing to fit them. But just as the tide turned for plus-size fashion, there's a growing momentum towards height-inclusive clothing. DEWEY is truly leading the way, challenging industry norms and championing short-statured individuals. We're not following trends; we're setting them by prioritising the unique proportions and needs of our community. The demand for height-inclusive fashion is undeniable, and the industry's slow response echoes the early days of plus-size fashion. However, if history has taught us anything, it's that change is not only possible but inevitable when enough voices unite for a common cause. Press Release: Leading figures from UK Fashion attend Roundtable with Labour’s Shadow minister at the the Design Museum On the 30th January 2024, Fashion Roundtable, along with Shadow Minister for Creative Industries and Digital, Sir Chris Bryant, hosted a roundtable with the Parliamentary Labour Party where industry leaders outlined the opportunities and challenges faced by the British fashion sector. The roundtable was preceded by a tour of the Design Museum’s ‘REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion’ exhibition by Guest Curator Sarah Mower MBE. This allowed for the context of how politics and fashion could be a power play for the UK when combined effectively. Chaired by Fashion Roundtable’s CEO, Tamara Cincik, speakers for the subsequent roundtable included Sarah Mower MBE – the British Fashion Council's Ambassador for Emerging Talent, Chair of the NEWGEN committee and Guest Curator of the Design Museum’s ‘REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion’ exhibition; John Horner – CEO of Models 1 and the Chair of the British Fashion Model Agents Association (BFMA); Kate Hills – CEO of Make it British; Professor Dilys Williams – Head of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, UAL; and Sylvie Freund-Pickavance – Global Strategy and Business Development Director, Value Retail. The meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders within the sector to be heard and provided a strong overview of the current landscape of the British fashion sector. From opportunities for international business; British made and owned fashion procurement and onshoring opportunities; end-of-life strategies; barriers and opportunities for NEW GEN as well as existing talent within the UK and global markets; and a means for creative education to recentre sustainability within the curriculum. The EU has 16 pieces of legislation already in place for the fashion and textiles sector and it was noted that the UK has an opportunity to align and develop a sector which can operate in the local and global market with ease.
