------------------------------------------------------------------------ We're excited to announce a new initiative that extends our commitment to environmental conservation! Our Pankarte PLV site has just introduced a beehive as part of our daily efforts to protect an officially endangered species: the bee. In collaboration with the AQUAterre association, this initiative isn't just about beekeeping; it's about education and awareness. Our team members will have the opportunity to learn about the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem and the vital efforts needed to safeguard their future. This project isn't aimed at honey production, but rather at fostering a stronger, more resilient bee population for the years to come! Community forests play a key role in preserving biodiversity
Learn more abour commercially extinct species in this post prepared collaboratively by Big Fish Initiative and Perry Institute for Marine Science.
Happy Fishy Fishery Friday, and welcome to another collaborative post with the Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) for Marine Science 🐡🔬We often talk about the fisheries crises that we are facing, and highlight solutions to #recoverbigfish. Today we’re focusing on species that have declined below a level where it is economically feasible to target them as a fishery. They are called " Commercially Extinct Species”. A clear example is the critically endangered Nassau Grouper, once an abundant fishery species whose aggregations were targeted in the entire Caribbean region. Uncontrolled fishing of large concentrations of the most fecund individuals in a population greatly reduces the mature, spawning stock at local and potentially regional scales. 💡Check out our post to learn more about Commercially Extinct Species, what you can do to help, and brighten your Friday with happy news of species recovery in the Caribbean ____________________________________________________________ Bienvenidxs a nuestra publicación de los viernes en colaboración con el Instituto Perry de Ciencias Marinas y el Consejo de Pesca del Caribe 🐡🔬 A menudo hablamos de las crisis pesqueras a las que nos enfrentamos, y destacamos soluciones para #recuperaralgranpez. #fishfactfriday #fishsmart #recoverbigfish #fisheriesresearch #ecosystemoverfishing #sustainablefisheries #seafood #livelihoods #RespectBreedingGrounds #ProtectYourCatch #protectspawningaggregations #panparamañana

One size doesn't fit all. Interesting article today on https://www.vitisphere.com about the risk of certain marginal vineyards using cover crops. They use up the water and nitrogen. This is usually fine, but in certain areas the vines can't take the competition and don't fruit. Literally counterproductive. Perhaps instead of fretting about rain, we should welcome it. I don't know of a UK vineyard without cover - even if it is just grass. Cover crops are so helpful for maintaining soil health and increasing biodiversity. It looks pretty too (although much more difficult to wade through to peer at the vines!)

PROJECT OF THE WEEK: #No 24 –Acari LLC This week, we are highlighting the first of our newly announced ORIC2023 winners AcariLLC who are building a network of small-scale fishers to capture and process invasive lionfish while creating a market for their use as pet food. Invasive species are one of the highest drivers of biodiversity loss as they outcompete native species for resources and territory and have few natural predators. Over the past two decades, artisanal fishers in Latin America have experienced severe repercussions due to the invasive lionfish. Despite their abundance and threat to local biodiversity, there is currently little demand to capture lionfish due to cultural factors and the higher costs to catch and process them. Through Acari LLC’s approach, fishers are incentivised to focus their efforts on the invasive lionfish, helping native fish populations thrive by guaranteeing the purchase of 100% of the catch upfront. Under the ORIC23 cohort, Acari is expanding its operations and building a supply chain for lionfish in #Colombia. This project will focus on supporting fishing cooperatives with technical training and upgrading their processing capabilities to meet US Food and Drug Administration standards. Acari is also partnering with INVERSA Leathers – a previous ORIC project winner – to process a higher percentage of lionfish to create pet treats and sustainable leather. In World First, Scimitar Horned Oryx Upgraded from Extinct in Wild to Endangered Owing to Decades of Zoo Work In one of Africa’s last great wildernesses, a remarkable thing has happened—the scimitar-horned oryx, once declared extinct in the wild, is now classified only as endangered. It’s the first time the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s largest conservation organization, has ever moved a species on its Red List from ‘Extinct […] The post In World First, Scimitar Horned Oryx Upgraded from Extinct in Wild to Endangered Owing to Decades of Zoo Work appeared first on Good News Network. Planting trees, recruiting workforce and better managing plots: to adapt the French #forest to climate change, up to ten billion euros will be needed over ten years according to the "Objectif Forêt" report presented by the French Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau. This report, drawn up by the council specializing in sustainable forest management, after consultations with players in the field, assessed the situation and proposed actions to adapt the #forestry sector to #climatechange. Over the next ten years, climate change will require the renewal of vulnerable or burnt trees, the afforestation of abandoned farmland, and other actions on around 2.6 million hectares, or 15% of the forest in mainland France. This vast intervention program will be shared between private owners, who hold 75% of the forest, and the government, which will cover part of the investment to ensure that public and private nursery chains are structured. The SWIFTT project has the potential to be a major contributor to this plan, by offering a holistic forest health monitoring service using #Copernicus #satellite imagery and powerful #machinelearning models. SWIFTT will help forest managers to detect and map the various threats to which their forests are exposed, including windthrow damage, insect outbreaks and #wildfire risk. Foresters will be able to act proactively and allocate resources efficiently for a timely intervention, making France, and the whole of Europe, better positioned to combat climate change and preserve its biodiversity through healthier forests. Adapted from “Le Figaro”, read more about the report here (in French): https://lnkd.in/gY8Jed4k Learn more about the SWIFTT project : https://swiftt.eu/ Follow SWIFTT on Twitter: https://lnkd.in/ezHrbYXm #environment #forestry #satellites #ai #machinelearning #horizoneurope
