Even globally renowned artists like Jennifer Lopez are facing difficulties in today's concert industry, which is manifested by her recent struggles to sell tour tickets. There's a big change coming in entertainment! A recent Business Insider story does a good job reporting. "JLo is apparently having a hard time selling tickets," the author said, which led to the cancellation of several tour dates despite rebranding her tour as a greatest hits showcase. Other artists like The Black Keys and Troye Sivan are experiencing underwhelming ticket sales, suggesting a broader trend of market challenges. Why has this happened? The phenomenon is partly due to an oversaturated market where a multitude of artists have simultaneously returned to touring post-pandemic in an attempt to recoup losses. "You'd never before had a moment in time where all the horses lined up at the starting gate and they all went out on the road at the same time," said Gary Witt, CEO of The Pabst Theater Group. This congestion has diluted audience attendance and heightened competition among artists. Economic factors further complicate the landscape, with soaring ticket prices dampening consumer enthusiasm. David "5-1" Norman, a touring industry veteran, points out, "Ticket prices are just astronomical right now," which adds a significant financial burden to potential concert-goers. There are also major concerns about Live Nation and Ticketmaster exerting monopoly power on the pricing. Artists and promoters are adapting by rethinking their tour strategies, such as downsizing venues or combining forces with other acts to attract larger crowds. It's definitely not the end of entertainment, but a shift in the way that the sector works. #entertainment #jlo #artists #livenation https://lnkd.in/eG9iH-GS

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF MUSIC Music is often part of our lives. It can punctuate our day, be discreet, be linked to important moments or moments of rest. It can also surround us without our choosing it (in a shop, for example). But did you know that music plays a vital role in our physiology, our cognitive reactions and our minds, at every age? When I was younger, my Tae Kwon Do teacher at Rhodes University often played rhythmic music during our warm-ups. Music influences the perception of effort and makes you forget how tired you are. This enabled us to last longer during sets and muscle strengthening. Moreover, depending on the music we listen to, it can have a beneficial effect on our sleep. It could make it easier to fall asleep, creating a state of well-being and relaxation through the rhythm and emotions it provokes. It also plays a role in reducing stress and anxiety. When we listen to music, we secrete dopamine (good mood) and endorphins, which act as an anti-depressant. Another effect of music is to stimulate creativity, attention and memory. Playing music is thought to enhance this effect. One of the reasons for this is that music increases the connections between the two hemispheres. There is certainly so much more to share about music that the subject is so vast. I'll end by sharing this concert video - compositions by Jean-Baptiste Lully. https://lnkd.in/esiAWy9u

There's been a lot of chatter about the post-Covid thirst for live entertainment abating as some major artists struggle to sell out shows. But on the other hand, Live Nation reported its biggest ever quarter in May and announce that the company is on track for a record year in 2024. (Live Nation said that attendance at its shows nearly doubled for international artists across top 50 global tours compared to five years ago.) Here's the thing: a small number of elite artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are driving massive ticket sales. For everyone else, touring is complicated and always has been. Jennifer Lopez and the Black Keys overestimated their staying power and canceled poorly selling concerts. But Olivia Rodrigo? Her shows have sold out, and tickets on the aftermarket are through the roof. Billie Eilish? Same. And it's impossible to find a ticket for Chapell Roan. All of those artists could play football stadiums if they wanted to do so, but they are not, and so their shows are selling out. The wild card in the deck: ticket fees from Live Nation are so bad that you can find competitive prices on the aftermarket. That's why the Department of Justice has sued Live Nation. If someone is on the fence about seeing Jennifer Lopez, paying excessive fees is just enough to dissuade them. I worry about the lesser known bands trying to make a name for themselves by touring small clubs. They can barely afford the costs of touring amid inflationary pressures. (They have to pay for their own travel costs just like you and I do -- and you know how expensive travel is these days.) They are the have-nots who cost maybe $20 to see at your local club and are playing their hearts out. If you want to support the touring industry and you are fortunate enough to live near a city where options are plentiful, give the lesser knowns a try. The big-name stars will be just fine. #Touring #LITrendingTopics #TheInsider #Music #Concerts https://lnkd.in/gk3KYA5w

For orchestra directors and concert planners. I've been doing some research. I don't have an enormous amount of data to go on, but, of the concert programmes I've managed to get hold of, which have included "Serenata" (the first movement of my Sinfonietta No.1 ("Silver")), more than 78% have used this piece as their concert opener. Some have included "Serenata" as a stand-alone work, some have paired it with the second movement, most have included the whole Sinfonietta. But so many have made it the first thing their audience hears. That tells me one of two things:- (a) they can't think where else to put it, or (b) it makes a great concert opener I know which I think! I'll put some links in the comments below for those not aware of the work. Check it out if you're looking for the ideal way to start your concert! #orchestra #youngaudience #classicalmusic

Reflecting on Paul Hodgins' observations, the resurgence of music events post-pandemic underscores the enduring appeal of in-person experiences. This sentiment resonates deeply with me, especially as someone who appreciates digital content but finds solace in the authenticity of face-to-face interactions. My recent engagements with The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and Creative Generation reaffirm the widespread desire for in-person connections, confirming broader trends indicating a notable uptick in attendance compared to early pandemic metrics. However, amidst these positive trends, the classical music sector presents a complex narrative. While it shows signs of revival, there's an urgency to address longstanding issues of diversity and relevance. As an advocate for inclusivity, I recognize the importance of celebrating successes while holding the sector accountable for fostering greater representation and innovation. Conversely, the nonprofit theater and dance sectors confront a more challenging landscape, marked by closures and uncertainties. Recent surveys reveal a sobering reality, with top-tier regional theaters projecting a significant decline in productions compared to pre-pandemic levels. This decline prompts critical reflections on programming choices and audience engagement strategies. Furthermore, it begs the question: Is it time for a reassessment of the aims and structure of the regional theater ecosystem? In my view, the key to revitalizing the arts lies in fostering intergenerational collaboration and embracing fresh perspectives. However, entrenched systems and prolonged tenures in leadership positions pose formidable obstacles to innovation. To overcome these challenges, we must advocate for pathways that empower individuals at every stage of their careers, coupled with a commitment to change. As Michael Bobbit (Executive Director of the Mass Cultural Council) suggests, addressing these complex issues requires a collaborative effort involving diverse stakeholders. We must look beyond traditional boundaries and seek insights from disciplines such as economics, entrepreneurship, and futurism. By fostering inclusive dialogue and leveraging expertise from diverse fields, we can chart a path toward a more vibrant, resilient, and sustainable future for the arts. #Arts #Culture #Music #Theater #Dance #Innovation #Diversity #Inclusion #AudienceEngagement #CommunityEngagement #Leadership #Collaboration #Resilience #FutureOfWork #COVID19

What's wrong with the classical concert experience? Insightful article across the pond from Steve Wright. Wanted to share a few highlights below to continue bringing awareness to performance-based organizations who are looking at building capacity to address “what does being relevant look like at our organization?” From the article: (link in the comments) “The study, commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), considered a number of potential innovations to the classical concert experience, and asked respondents how much they would like to see these changes. Top 10 innovations that would make people more likely to attend an orchestral concert (national average results) 1. Shorter concerts of an hour, rather than having them in two halves – 27% 2. Having access to information before the concert so I can understand the music a little better - 27% 3. More daytime or matinee concerts, so I can take family and friends – 24% 4. Not having to dress up to go to a concert – 24% 5. The conductor speaking to the audience before a performance – 20% 6. Meet and greets with the players / soloists after a concert – 17% 7. Digital programmes I can access in advance on my tablet or device – 12% 8. Being allowed to take photographs or film clips of the concert with my phone - 12% 9. Being encouraged to applaud between movements, or when I want to – 12% 10. Being encouraged to react on social media during the concert – 11%” Great suggestions from the study. Would love to see more performance-based organizations innovating and promoting #Accessibility, #Inclusion, #Respect, #Time, and daily #CulturalAwareness (themes resonating from the data). Performance-based organizations, go back to your WHY. Creating cultural change in the arts sector (i.e., new audiences, equitable and inclusive student to professional artists pipeline, accessibility, balanced representation from historically excluded and marginalized people in the arts, developing a true sense of belonging and not additive, etc.) starts with establishing “the WHY.” Respectfully, Dr. Roque Diaz #Relevant #Orchestras #Operas #Performance-based #ArtsOrganizations #YourWHY #Innovate
