🧻 ♻ ∙ A new food-brick recycling line was recently inaugurated in Hondouville, Normandy, France. Essity's 16 million euro investment represents a significant advancement in food-brick recycling. 6 out of 10 cartons recycled in France are processed at this plant and transformed into paper hygiene products. It is the world's first production line designed exclusively for recycling food bricks to produce toilet paper, hand towels, and professional wiping products. Previously, the plant primarily produced postcards before shifting its focus to recycling. Paper recycling has been in operation since 2008, and food carton recycling was subsequently added to the process. "We therefore installed a customized recycling line, the only one of its kind in the world, for food bricks, which contain 75% cardboard, 14% plastic layers, 5% aluminum, and 6% plastic caps. They are delivered in 200 kg bales. The bricks are then soaked, crushed, and filtered to recover 80% of the cellulose-wadding fibers. 100% of these fibers are then transformed into toilet paper and hand towels. National pilot programme for recycling reusable shopping bags Walmart Canada is launching a national pilot programme for customers to recycle their reusable shopping bags. Under the plan, customers can send in their extra or damaged Walmart reusable blue shopping bags to TerraCycle, who will either wash and donate them to charity partners, including Food Banks Canada, or recycle them. Recycled bags will be processed into raw materials for items like shipping pallets and outdoor furniture. Walmart Canada’s senior manager of sustainability stated that the programme allows Canadians to give their excess or damaged reusable bags a second life, preventing them from ending up in landfills. Customers can sign up for the scheme on TerraCycle’s website and send bags in a box or shipping envelope with a minimum of five bags per shipment, provided with a free shipping label. Enrolment limits apply, and customers will be added to a waiting list if the program is full. Canada banned single-use plastic shopping bags in December 2022, but Walmart Canada had already stopped offering them in April that year to prevent a reported 680 million plastic bags from entering circulation annually. « Tout le cycle de vie des gobelets jetables, de l'extraction des matières premières à la production et au transport, nécessite une quantité importante d'énergie, contribuant à la dégradation de l'environnement, sans compter la décomposition lente des gobelets jetables, en particulier ceux avec des revêtements en plastique » Il est impératif d'envisager des solutions plus responsables pour nos cafés à emporter et privilégier l'utilisation des contenants réutilisables. Cependant, il faut reconnaître que même ces alternatives durables ont un impact sur l'environnement si elles sont mal utilisées. Il faut favoriser la durabilité !
