The Australian Honours and Awards system celebrates individuals who make outstanding contributions locally, nationally and internationally. There is a lot of diversity within the recognition, but all Order of Australia recipients have one thing in common – someone nominated them for recognition. No one, no matter who they are or what they have done, can be recognised unless they are nominated. So, who can nominate, and who can be nominated? Anyone in the community can nominate someone for recognition. But, the people you nominate: - Must be alive at the time of their nomination - Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident - Have had no previous recognition by the Order in the last five years If you know someone who has gone above and beyond, start the process by filling out the nomination form. As a Pakistani citizen, reflecting on the tradition of conferring national awards by the Government of Pakistan on our National Days evokes a sense of pride mixed with a tinge of skepticism. While these honors are meant to celebrate excellence and inspire future generations, there's an underlying disconnect that begs for deeper introspection. Firstly, the sheer abundance of titles bestowed upon individuals during these ceremonies seems to surpass the norms observed in both developed nations and neighboring countries. It raises questions about the quality versus quantity dilemma—are we truly honoring exceptional individuals, or are these awards becoming diluted tokens of appreciation? Moreover, the dissonance between the award and actual contributions to national development is glaring. Too often, we witness recipients whose accomplishments pale in comparison to the significance of the honor bestowed upon them. It leaves one pondering whether the awarding process adequately scrutinizes the impact and value of individuals' endeavors towards nation-building. Yet, amidst these reservations, lies a deeper quandary. Pakistan boasts an abundance of talent, intellect, and ingenuity—qualities exemplified by many recipients of national awards. However, our nation continues to grapple with economic challenges, despite the presence of such capable individuals. It begs the question: If Pakistan is endowed with such remarkable talent, why are we still a struggling economy? Perhaps the answer lies not just in recognizing talent but also in effectively channeling it towards avenues that drive sustainable growth and progress. It's a call for introspection not just for policymakers but for each of us as citizens—to ensure that our collective efforts and talents are harnessed towards building a brighter future for Pakistan. In essence, national awards should not just be symbolic gestures but reflections of genuine merit and contribution. They should serve as beacons guiding us towards a more prosperous and inclusive society. As we celebrate our nation's achievements, let us also strive to bridge the gap between recognition and reality, ushering in an era where talent truly fuels our nation's ascent. #Pakistan #CivilAwards

Congratulations to Genna Lehman, Lisa Conway, Nu Nu Win and Carlyn Waters, awardees of this year’s The Sir Roland Wilson Foundation (SRWF) annual prizes – an initiative by the SRWF to recognise and celebrate the achievements of scholars and alumni in strengthening links between public policy and academia. A special shout-out to Nu Nu Win for being awarded the Joan Uhr Prize, for her research investigating business tax policy and the macro economy and contribution to public policy and strengthening links between the Australian Public Service (APS) and academia. We appreciate the SRWF also recognising Nu Nu’s ground-breaking research with Robert Breunig and Dan Hansell on analysing the promotion prospects of staff from diverse and inclusive backgrounds in the APS. Since the release of the ‘Modelling Australian Public Service careers’ research report, Nu Nu has actively presented its findings and recommendations to departmental agency heads and executive boards within the APS and at relevant high-profile conferences. Nu Nu’s research provided compelling evidence for APS leadership to inform their approach to cultural diversity in their agencies – most notably the current APS culturally and linguistically diverse employment strategy led by the Australian Public Service Commission. The SRWF and its award prizes demonstrate progress and success in public policy development is driven and impacted by evidence-based research – this is something we at the ANU Centre for Asian-Australian Leadership is working on contributing to through our headline research projects ‘Counting for Change’ and the ‘Measuring the level and effect of Asian-Australian and other ethnic diversity in senior leadership on the performance of Australia companies’, which we aim to release next year.
