As a communication leader, I’ve always been a media junkie — mainlining multiple sources of news and information to try to make sense of the world. So, I was in my element at my first Women In Media Conference held recently in Sydney. There were many great moments over the two-day event — here are just a few from the stellar lineup of speakers: “Don’t wait for people to open doors for you, open them yourself, or kick them down if necessary” — Ita Buttrose AC OBE, Chair, ABC Board (keynote address) “Diversity breeds original thinking” — Kirsty Muddle, CEO, Dentsu Creative (on myth busting in advertising) “Don’t believe what you think, believe what you know” — Jane Huxley, CEO, Are Media (on the business of media) “Look through the eyes, ears, hearts and minds of your audience” — Mia Freedman, co-founder, Mamamia (as above) “Have a point of view, be passionate and don’t be afraid to give your opinion, whatever room you are in” — Sally Riley, former head of ABC drama, entertainment & Indigenous talent (on driving female narratives) And finally, five lessons from Leigh Sales AM on what makes a good journalist: 1) Curiosity & close observation 2) Listening carefully 3) Going the extra mile 4) Empathy 5) Genuinely caring about what you do She reflected that the same qualities that make a good journalist make a good person. It’s a good list. Also ICYMI, magazines are rebounding against the deluge (and distractions) of digital media (Australian Women’s Weekly and Marie Claire circulations are up), Elle magazine is returning to print in Australia and if you want to reach people in Toowoomba, it’s magazines they’re reading. I especially enjoyed meeting members of the PNG contingent (Burnet Institute where I work operates there) — Joys Eggins and Belinda Kora) — and seeing Sandra Sully again who chaired the first day of the conference and was every bit as warm, funny and down-to-earth as I remembered, having met her while hosting guests in AAMI marquee at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival many moons ago. It was great to catch up with my IABC friend and Women In Media Australia committee member (Victoria) Claudia Loeber-Raab. >> What would you add to Leigh’s list of the qualities that make a good person?
