[✉️🖋️📝] In this interview with Laurent Cappelletti 🇺🇦, professor holding the Chair of Accounting and Management Control at the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (Cnam (Conservatoire national des arts et métiers), Paris) and a research director at the Institute of Socio-Economics ISEOR, the focus is on crises of knowledge. Laurent Cappelletti starts by discussing the book produced by CNAM professors concerning the crisis of knowledge related to the COVID-19 pandemic. He mentions the thesis that the crises we are experiencing might actually be crises of knowledge. He explains that to understand these crises, it's crucial to distinguish between knowledge, belief, and opinion, while highlighting deviations such as conspiracy theories. He emphasizes the importance of scientific consensus in knowledge production, noting that consensus is a complex and fluctuating process. The production of knowledge is a critical aspect. Cappelletti sheds light on the role of politics, both at the macro level (elected officials) and the micro level (decision-makers), in negotiating the transition of knowledge into real-world implementation. He highlights the significance of the social acceptability of this knowledge. The interview also mentions the example of underestimating the costs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Cappelletti explains that hidden costs can be up to twice as high as visible costs and that these hidden costs are often overlooked. He describes some of these hidden costs, such as psychological issues, absenteeism at work, occupational diseases, and problems related to remote work. Finally, he points out that the numbers show a continuing deterioration of the situation, with increasing absenteeism, largely due to psychosomatic issues related to lockdowns and resulting anxiety. In summary, Laurent Cappelletti underscores the importance of knowledge, scientific consensus, social acceptability, and hidden costs in understanding and managing current crises, particularly those related to COVID-19. He highlights the impact of these crises on society and the resulting tensions.

I am a legal scholar focusing on the risks and harms to human rights resulting from a variety of asymmetries of power.
Amidst the #financial crisis at one of the oldest international organizations in the world, the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC numerous voices are turning to judge the former leadership of the institution, namely its former president Peter Maurer ( https://lnkd.in/eY-Nia4T ). It is sometimes difficult to distinguish how much of this criticism is merited and how much is simply a bitter outburst during tough times. However, I think a few #lessons can be drawn from this unpleasant situation: 1) No #institution is safe from financial distress. 2) Financial distress does cause #reputational harm. 3) Financial distress does not equal poor #effectiveness of an institution, but will certainly lead to it if the financial crisis is prolonged. 4) Growing institutions of all kinds – private and public – should #diversify their leadership structure BEFORE they engage in growing their #budgets or #operations. #Diversity of thought and culture is one of the most important #checksandbalances that institutions can create to prevent bad financial decisions from being adopted.

🎤📰 Maxim Manturov in Belgium’s La Libre: Donald Trump or Joe Biden, who's best for stock markets? Depending on who becomes the next US president, different sectors of the economy may benefit. What can investors do about it? Maksim Manturov, Head of Investment Research at Freedom Finance Europe, takes on what the US election results could mean for the stock market, in his article published by La Libre, Belgium’s major French-language newspaper covering national and international news. If Joe Biden is reelected, his focus on climate issues could benefit renewable energy and sustainable technology sectors. Biden’s intention to increase healthcare spending could also support the pharmaceutical industry. On the other hand, Donald Trump's win is likely to give a broad boost to the oil and gas stocks, as well as the defence and aerospace sectors, according to Mr Manturov. "It is difficult to predict with certainty the specific impact of the election on each sector of the economy. Factors such as technological progress, the state of the global economy among others play an important role. However, history shows that presidential election years have generally been favourable for markets. While the 2024 election year may also be marked by serious geopolitical issues, historical data shows that stock markets tend to rise during these periods," the expert said. #freedom24com #freedomfinanceeurope #manturov #uselection

Seminario | Martedì 18 giugno 2024 Aula Master (Edificio C2), ore 13.30 - 15.00 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚 (𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐝𝐢 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐨) 𝑇𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑠 𝑎 𝐷𝑜𝑢𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝐵𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑅𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠 With Roberta Capello (Politecnico di Milano) Abstract Despite the large attention given to regional disparities, a theoretical framework simultaneously linking the inter and intra- regional development processes over time is still missing. A vast set of empirical analyses on inter-regional income inequalities indeed exists. In most cases it witnesses the presence of the famous Williamson’s inverted U-shaped relation between GDP per capita and inter-regional income inequalities, and of its augmented shape where the inverted U turns upward again at later stages of development. A much more limited literature has studied the same relationship at the intra-regional level. Our claim in this paper is that a double bell theory must be formulated in which inter and intra-regional disparity trends are conceptually interlinked, and the influence that one exerts over the other highlighted so to better understand their concurrent evolution. Empirical evidence is provided for such a framework on European regions.

Merci à Marianne Dépelteau pour cet excellent article. Thanks to Marianne Dépelteau for this excellent article and the invaluable input of Andrew Griffith and Mikal Skuterud. The issue goes far beyond the simple fact that experts "feel" ignored. They are systematically (read: often deliberately) ignored, along with their data and evidence, not only in immigration but in many critical domains such as the environment, healthcare, etc. In a democracy, nothing necessarily follows from evidence, but at the very least, there needs to be a decent level of transparency regarding the choices made in our name by politicians, trade-offs, and their consequences, which is sorely lacking in the Canadian context.https://
