Have you heard about coral gene banking? 👀 Gene banks are used to store biomaterial like genetic codes and seeds of plants and species around the world. And that includes corals. Biobanking of corals is seen as a safety net, as so many corals are being lost to climate change, pollution, bleaching events and habitat loss. In fact, there are a wide range of organizations globally that are involved in coral gene banking. This includes: Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium’s International Coral Gene Bank The Maritime Museum Aquarium in Gothenburg, Sweden The Bahamas Coral Gene Bank at Atlantis Paradise Island (BCGB) is a collaborative effort of the Government of The Bahamas, Atlantis Blue Project Foundation, Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) and University of The Bahamas. The Coral Restoration Foundation™ The Great Barrier Reef Legacy’s Living Coral Biobank Project in Australia Find out more about coral biobanking here: https://lnkd.in/eMJNNEzU Do you know of more coral banking projects? The Australasian Biospecimen Network Association (ABNA) has made a concerted effort to engage and support the growth of biobanking within Australasia, with particular emphasis on raising the profile of emerging biobanks in areas of growing priority. With a commitment to fostering growth and innovation, ABNA continues to inspire a culture of biobanking research and biospecimen science among early career biobankers. This approach ensures the longevity of crucial biobanking infrastructure for future generations. As ISBER marks 10 years of affiliate collaboration with Australasian Biobankers and prepares to welcome ISBER delegates to Australian shores for the 2024 annual meeting, Biopreservation and Biobanking is planning a special issue intending to showcase the truly unique and innovative work within the region. Celebrating diversity and individuality, the issue will highlight novel approaches to challenges of relevance for regional stakeholders as well as the global research community. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: • Environmental and conservation biobanking including work on endangered and extinct species, responses to climate change and environmental destruction • Projects emphasizing the protection of biodiversity in the Australasian landscape • Exploring collaborations with indigenous populations and models of indigenous consent for sample collection • Programs focusing on areas of social, ethical and legal priority such as those developed to repatriate or return indigenous samples collected without consent • Research exploring inclusive strategies for engagement, addressing the heterogeneity of populations, or implementing biobanking protocols in marginalized or vulnerable groups that have been previously excluded from participation will also be highly regarded The manuscript deadline is May 31, 2024. We are eager to consider your research and look forward to your submission! #biobanking #Australasian #biomedical #biodiversity #biospecimenscience #callforpapers Marianna Bledsoe ISBER https://lnkd.in/erY-eg3s

Reflecting on a successful #Bio24. I had the honour of participating in various delegations touring Illumina’s San Diego headquarters, hosted at our beautiful Executive Briefing Center (EBC). Delegations came from countries as diverse as Korea, India, UAE, Australia, Italy, Taiwan, Canada, Lithuania, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, France, Brazil and others, reflecting the true global nature of our sector. Many important discussions were had, all about unlocking the power of the genome through partnerships. Discussions ranged from implementation of large national population datasets and biobanks, to ensuring equity of access through reimbursement, the ongoing importance of pandemic surveillance, novel drug discovery through pharma partnerships, monitoring ocean biodiversity, breeding low methane-producing cows and fostering an entrepreneurial startup ecosystem! (Too many colleagues were involved to name everyone personally - you know who you are!) #illuminaproud #genomics

Africa is known for its rich and diverse ecosystems, and these benefits are particularly important for the continent due to its dependence on natural resources and the challenges it faces. Here are some of the key benefits of biodiversity in Africa: -Ecosystem Services -Food Security -Medicinal Resources -Tourism and Recreation -Cultural and Spiritual Significance -Genetic Diversity -Climate Mitigation and Adaptation -Sustainable Livelihoods -Scientific and Educational Value -Conservation of Endangered Species It's essential to recognize that the benefits of biodiversity are interconnected, and the loss of biodiversity can have adverse effects on multiple aspects of human well-being. Therefore, conserving and sustainably managing Africa's biodiversity is not only vital for the continent but also for the entire planet. SEPARATIONS is committed to the African BioGenome Project and driving capacity building, training and awareness throughout the continent. We are proud to be given the opportunity to contribute positively and will do our part in future #watchthisspace Watch and like this video and subscribe to our YouTube channel if you are as passionate about Science in Africa as we are!
