The Eurelectric team visited ENGIE's Coo pumped storage hydropower station, the biggest battery in Belgium! ⚡ The Coo station is a crucial flexibility asset to compensate for the intermittency of renewables and to balance the Belgian grid. During times of low demand for electricity, the water is pumped to the upper reservoirs. During peak periods, the water is poured into the lower reservoir via the machine room housing the turbines and generators that generate the electricity. In this way, the water is circulated between the reservoirs without impacting natural water bodies. Did you know? When the turbines are running at maximum power (more than 1 GW), the water flow is 500m3 per second 💧 ❗ That's enough to empty an Olympic swimming pool in 5 seconds! An opportunity to discuss the economic model for mobility, the importance of partnerships and the hydrogen ecosystems! We are not going fast enough ! 🎯 We need to effectively triple our renewable energy capacity if we are to achieve our climate goals. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽 This why the Solar Impulse Foundation is joining forces with the Global Renewables Alliance and other key players in calling governments to NOW DELIVER CHANGE !!   And let’s not forget that #renewables and #efficiency are two sides of the same coin!   ⚡️ While we do need to decarbonise our energy consumption thanks to renewables, we first and above all need to reduce our needs.   Energy efficiency is the backbone of #decarbonisation AND competitiveness.
