It’s great to see the level of innovation taking place around the financing of carbon dioxide removals. Access to the right kind of finance needs to evolve at the same rate as the scientific research and operational scale-up which are critical to a #NetZero future.

🌲 My perspectives on the controversial Science Based Targets initiative move to allow the use of “environmental attribute certificates” to abate #scope3 emissions from the forest: Firstly, when wearing my #ESG hat, I’m not thrilled by how SBTi has handled this. In an angry letter signed by SBTi staff, the shift was made “without consulting the SBTi Technical Council, an independent body tasked with reviewing and approving standards” (GreenBiz Group). This undermines credible governance practices. However, when I’m wearing my #forest advocacy hat, I see this as an incredible opportunity for #climate, #nature, forest-dwelling communities and the forest industry. Yes, safeguards are required to ensure the transaction of so-called environmental attribute certificates are high-quality, but imagine the impact when they are! 🌲 Sustainable forest management becomes a financially viable and attractive option to produce sustainable wood products in jurisdictions where it is not yet common practice and where deforestation and forest degradation are the modus operandi, 🌲Vulnerable and threatened intact forest landscapes, in jurisdictions where incentives favor degrading/deforestation practices would now have the financial incentive needed to protect them, 🌲Rural, forest-dwelling communities have a means to avoid harmful degrading land-use practices, through being remunerated for stewarding responsible land-use, 🌲Forest-dependent corporations have incentive to make responsible land-use choices that otherwise may be considered a drag on the bottom line and result in deforestation/degradation. In short: ·      SBTi – fix how you’ve handled this, partner with the likes of The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) or others for certifying the integrity of Scope 3 abatement via these credits, ·      Companies seeking Scope 3 abatement – look for how you can utilize environmental attribute certificates for your Scope 3 emissions within your own supply chain or jurisdiction of impact ·      Forest businesses and other Forest landscape improvement initiatives – seek partnership with companies in need of these certificates where it makes sense (see point 2 above) 💡 What are your thoughts on this??? Most recently, we wrote on global politics: #elections in #UK and #France and give a #Tourism update 🌍 Read ⬇️ 📢 UK Elections: The Labour Party has won the legislative elections, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. With a large majority of seats (410 out of 650), the Labour Party's victory marks a significant shift in British politics. We expect pragmatism and fiscal discipline to guide the new government's policies, at least initially, with more ambitious changes likely after 2025. The public deficit is projected to reach -5.7% of GDP in 2024, supported by cyclical recovery, and -5.8% in 2025 as the government loosens policy. From 2026, a modest fiscal consolidation of GBP15bn (0.5% of GDP) per year is anticipated, with tax increases expected to fund higher spending and reduce the deficit. The economy is showing signs of improvement, and GDP growth is forecasted at 1.3% this year and 1.9% in 2025, benefiting from fiscal stimulus. Under a pragmatic Labour government, we anticipate 10-year GILT yields to finish 2024 at 3.7%, UK equity markets delivering returns of around 5% yearly, and stable corporate spreads in 2024, 2025 & 2026. 🗳️ French Elections: France is heading to the polls for the second round of legislative elections to elect their MPs. A hung parliament is the most likely scenario, with the right-wing Rassemblement National potentially winning the most seats. The process of forming the next government could extend into the summer under a hung parliament, with a hard deadline of the end of September to pass the 2025 draft budget bill. President Macron may appoint RN head Jordan Bardella as Prime Minister in the short term, even if the RN falls short of an absolute majority. Yet, we doubt such a government will last beyond September. The most probable outcome is a technocratic government taking over to ensure policy continuity and manage current affairs. Nevertheless, the public deficit is expected to remain large at close to -5% of GDP in 2025, and the government would face inherent instability. European and French assets have recovered after the first round, reflecting the reduced likelihood of a right-wing majority. 🚢 Tourism Rebound: Despite economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, the tourism sector is experiencing a rebound. Global hotel occupancy rates have reached 68%, the highest since the pandemic began. The cruise industry, in particular, is expecting summer 2024 to surpass summer 2019 in terms of bookings. International travel is the driver #1 of the tourism recovery, with Europe remaining the top destination worldwide. 💡 Decoding: European regulators recommend #ESG labeling in the revision of the #SFDR. This recommendation comes amidst a growing awareness of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues in finance. The #ESA aims to clarify the complex landscape of sustainable investments by providing clear benchmarks to investors. The goal? To strengthen confidence in responsible financial products through ESG labels. However, revising the SFDR could stretch over several years due to the new #EuropeanCommission. If made a priority, a proposal could be put forth in 2025 and revised in 2026. Although changes are not expected before 2027, it is crucial to stay informed about this potential reform, which could have significant impacts on the financial sector. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has already opted for a four-label system, set to take effect in December. In the long term, this initiative could profoundly transform the financial sector by promoting transparency and accountability.
