Dear SaaS Community, Not convinced that 𝗮 𝗖𝗧𝗢 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲? How many reasons do you need? I’ll give you 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲: 1️⃣ Operational responsibilities conflict with strategic ones. And, as it goes, operation will then always win, because of continuous commercial pressure. So if, as a CTO, you actively work on code, this will inevitably come at the cost of having to neglect strategic responsibilities. 2️⃣ The “flow” most seniors feel when being deep into coding, is counterproductive to strategic thinking. It absorbs a high percentage of your brain capacity, at the cost of losing track of time and interest in other stuff. Relationships have stranded because of it 😏. Good strategic decision making, out-of-the-box thinking, putting things in perspective, these are all things that don’t happen when we’re “in the flow”. 3️⃣ It’s an unhealthy situation to be a C-level leader and a peer to developers at the same time, due to conflicts of interest for instance. 4️⃣ Dotting the i’s is extremely expensive for a CTO to do, the reality being that the last 10% of your software efforts accounts for 90% of development time. 5️⃣ It’s a much more sustainable growth strategy to empower development teams using your own skills and experience, than to keep doing production yourself. ————————— This is part of an article I wrote to demystify the CTO role, a role that has suffered from the Startup World's hijacking of the role name to describe a Startup's Lead Developer. Although it's perfectly common to call this Lead Dev a CTO, this "Startup CTO" type has tainted the actual role of CTO, and, even if the "Startup CTO" is important in the early stages of a Startup, it's important to keep in mind that an actual CTO is a strategic, business-oriented C-level player, and should be the one bridging the gap between the board and development. ‘Le Chat’ ‘la platform’ Mistral AI artificial intelligence, France’s Startup Darling, Takes Aim at the US Market : Mistral's edge could come from customers that want to avoid being locked into particular cloud companies “Customers are even saying ‘Le Chat’ and ‘la platform’ It seems that the French touch is having an effect.” opportunity is huge — Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that the software and cloud market in generative AI market could reach $350 billion by 2032 : Mistral is going after OpenAI’s home turf “They do not want to be forced into an AI stack” “They want choices” Mistral released a series of AI models, which power generative AI services, and a ChatGPT-like feature called Le Chat : US manager says businesses are looking for alternatives to Big Tech : will find customers through these partners as well as via direct deals with companies using its open-source models. The Paris Blockchain Week 2024 was a great place to try and extract signal from noise of the “crypto world”. The public's view of this world is still mostly built on the “drama” picture by the general media, ignoring the very diverse intentions and achievements of the stakeholders. Can’t fully blame them as the “crypto world” is made of myriads of projects of very different intentions, scale, and quality, making it very difficult to figure out what is really happening. But #PBW24 did show advances in the maturity of the eco-system, making clear steps on its way to form a credible financial system, able to complement (if not replace, as some expect) the legacy one of “traditional finance” (or TradFi as the crypto guys call what was just “finance” so far 😊). The hints are in the field of #financialmarketinfrastructures (#FMI), #regulation, #interoperability and #standardization. Panels with TradFi #FMI operators (e.g. London Stock Exchange) and native crypto players showed that the general goal to build a proper #FMI on (some) blockchains is getting closer: the core functions, exchanges, market makers, custodians, financial information/analysis firms… can learn from their TradFi “ancestors” while benefitting of new options offered by the technology for greater efficiency (enjoying the lack of IT legacy). #regulation, which used to be a “front” between the crypto-world and the authorities, seems now appeased (at least in the EU), with most PBW2024 crypto-native panelists agreeing on the benefits of clarity (and expected stability) of rules. Authorities were well represented in PBW24: regulators, government, EU commission, and state development banks. On the other side, some crypto-natives are now proposing new protocol extensions for enabling #kowYourCustomer compliance in a decentralized environment. The “crypto-world” is an archipelago of thousands of networks supporting tens of thousands of applications, because it was born an initiative of individuals and more-or-less decentralized organizations. Interoperability was/is not the primary concern and is essentially handled on an ad-hoc and private basis (creation of “bridges”). Still PBW24 witnessed some various #standardization initiatives (ISO, W3C,…), that should enable some interop. Not all these standards will end up being used, and the standardization process is itself quite fragmented. There are more blockchain networks than mobile networks globally, but blockchain/cryptofinance standardization (where needed) is lacking strong driving forces like #GSMA and #3GPP : how the crypto eco-system manages to build proper driving forces for interop remains to be identified. It is great to see public/permissionless blockchains becoming more credible infrastructures to support the promising Digital Asset business. Hopefully, beyond this step, the crypto eco-system will evolve to better serve society at large: better than current crypto and better than current TradFi.

Software is the #1 IT spending category a critical topic for the Comex due to its growing impact on EBIDTA The key drivers for software spending growth are: • Uncontrolled software (Shadow IT) • Unoptimized software spending • Vendor price increases While solutions exist to ensure software usage is aligned with spend, effectively managing vendor price increases remains unaddressed. 𝟭 - 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝗧 • Shadow IT represents ~ 33% of software stacks • Detecting it is a key step to assigning IT buyers • This is the start of monitoring / optimizing spend • Solutions such as Beamy detect all software usage 𝟮 - 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 • Around 30% of software licenses are unused • Monitoring actual usage versus contracts is tough • Automating monitoring helps identify opportunities • This enables licenses to be cut when relevant • Solutions such as USU, Zlury exist 𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀? #DLT | #securities | #regulations : Luxembourg introduces new #legal framework for #dematerialised securities using DLT. The Ministry of Finance has submitted a bill of law – the Blockchain Bill IV – to the Luxembourg Parliament that would amend the law of 6 April 2013 on dematerialized securities to facilitate the use of #distributedledgertechnology (DLT) for the issuance, holding and transfer of dematerialized securities, including #equity securities. The Blockchain Bill IV makes it easier to issue, hold and reconcile dematerialized securities using DLT, by (i) eliminating the need for a central account keeper to have a second custody layer and (ii) allowing the securities to be directly credited to the accounts of the investors or their nominees.
