Improving animal health globally, thereby ensuring a better future for all. (WOAH, founded as OIE)
À propos
WOAH is the global authority on animal health: we work to ensure the health of animals & their environments across the world, recognising that animal health impacts everyone’s health & that the safety of our future depends on it. Since 1924, we have focused on the complexities of animal health. Over time, we expanded our mission to include building partnerships with other international organisations on global initiatives, developing & disseminating knowledge, monitoring animal diseases & designing science-based protocols to manage outbreaks before they become a threat to public health, livelihoods & international trade. We have 182 Members worldwide that are committed to complying with our animal health & welfare standards. We strive for transparency in everything we do. We know that collaboration is the key to obtaining sustainable results, which is why we endeavour to ensure solidarity among all our Members to effectively control animal diseases, whether they affect livestock, aquatic animals or wildlife. We work to create a substantial network of people, a solid knowledge base and a pool of resources & information that can be easily accessed and shared. We work to empower all of our Members, communities and partners in our global quest for a more sustainable society, one that benefits animals, humans & the planet. We are building a better future through better animal health.

Our latest report shows that animal disease which already affects domestic animals is endangering wildlife as well, posing a significant threat to biodiversity and jeopardising efforts to eradicate these diseases. Among these, are African swine fever and avian influenza. Between January and June 2024 alone, 55 countries and territories reported 3,800 outbreaks in wildlife, with over 11,500 cases registered and 151 wildlife species affected by eight diseases. Ten percent of these species are at risk of extinction. This #WorldAnimalDay, it's important to remember the underlying interdependence between ecosystems. The health of wildlife is deeply entwined with the health of other animals, the environment and even humans. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e5yizzjN

Did you know that antimicrobial resistance could result in production losses in the #livestock sector equivalent to the consumption needs of more than 2 billion people annually? A global 30% reduction in animal #antimicrobial use in the next five years can raise the world’s GDP in 2050 by up to $14 billion. #Rabies is 100% preventable, yet it still claims 59,000 lives each year—40% of which are children. The solution? Vaccinating #dogs. WOAH’s Vaccine Bank has already delivered over 28 million rabies vaccines to countries in Asia and Africa, helping to stop the spread of this deadly disease. By providing high-quality, low-cost rabies vaccines, WOAH empowers countries to focus on saving lives through awareness, education, and mass vaccination campaigns. This #WorldRabiesDay, we are talking about the need for humane dog population management. #Rabies is one of the deadliest zoonotic diseases, killing 59,000 people each year. Millions of healthy dogs are inhumanely culled out of fear, but this approach doesn’t stop the spread of rabies. Through responsible pet ownership, vaccination, and veterinary care, we can protect both dogs and people. #WRD
