🚀 Europe’s Moonshot Ambitions for AI: Insights from Ann Nowe🌟 In the second session of the #AIMoonshot event, titled "Discuss the Future of AI in Europe – Trustworthy, Secure, Competitive, and Multicultural AI Systems for the Benefit of Society," experts shared their perspectives on shaping the future of #AI in #Europe. 🌍 🎤 Ann Nowé, Professor of Computer Science and Director of the AI Lab at Vrije Universiteit Brussel provided her expert insights. Ann's research focuses on Reinforcement Learning (#RL), Multi-Agent, and Multi-Objective RL. She co-leads the Situated AI challenge in the Flemish AI program, emphasising the interplay between theory and applications. Professor of Machine Learning, Holger Hoos, criticizes the current narrow AI strategy in Europe: 1. Lack of Ambition and Vision: Hoos feels that the strategy lacks the large-scale ambition and clear vision that characterized CERN's establishment. He believes that the current proposals are too narrow, focusing primarily on using AI to enhance scientific research rather than addressing broader applications in industry, government, and public administration. (Science|Business, 2023; Humboldt Foundation, 2023). 2. Insufficient Consultation with AI Community: Hoos points out that a significant portion of the AI community, including key stakeholders like CLAIRE, was not adequately consulted in the development of the current strategy. This lack of involvement raises concerns about the strategy's alignment with the needs and insights of the AI research community. (Science|Business, 2023; CLAIRE, 2023). 3. Scale and Focus: There is a belief that the European Commission's approach has been too fragmented and modest in scale, especially compared to the concentrated efforts and substantial investments seen in the US and China.
