#LINO24 Day 5 by Denis Janković
Today marked the final day of our formal conference at the Inselhalle, where, with the city theater, we've spent the majority of our time over the past five days.
The day began wonderfully with an engaging talk by Prof. Reinhard Genzel, the 2020 Physics Nobel Laureate known for his discovery of the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy. Prof. Genzel's sense of humor added a delightful touch to his presentation. The morning continued with another fascinating astrophysics lecture by Prof. Didier Queloz, focusing on the search for exoplanets.
Later, I attended two inspiring Agora Talks, one by Prof. Kurt Würthlich and another by Prof. William D. Phillips, both of which were highly educational and motivating.
The highlight of my day was having lunch with Prof. Takaaki Kajita, one of the scientists who discovered that neutrinos have mass. I had the privilege of sitting next to him, and along with nine other students, we engaged in an open, unfiltered discussion for almost two hours on various intriguing topics. We even exchanged business cards! Prof. Kajita is genuinely kind and honest, and the food at the restaurant was, of course, delicious.
In the afternoon, I participated in an open exchange with Prof. Didier Queloz, who is exceptionally sunny and funny. Our conversation spanned a wide range of topics, from his research to his personal life and his thoughts on current issues. Following this enriching discussion, we enjoyed some downtime among ourselves. We spent time on the pier, filming videos, and playing with the swans. David even captured some lovely photos of the encounter.
The day concluded with a Bavarian evening, where I had the privilege of dining with Prof. Serge Haroche and his wife. After the opening speeches, we enjoyed a pleasant conversation. My discussion with Prof. Haroche's wife, an anthropologist, was particularly interesting and enriching. Attendees were encouraged to wear traditional attire from their countries, and many, including our own Shanika, did so. The evening was filled with Bavarian activities, music, and dances. We had a wonderful time and took some memorable photos together.
Tomorrow, we'll be heading off on a boat trip, but I'll let my colleague share more about that. Stay tuned!
