🌍 Today, Ursula von der Leyen was re-elected as President of the European Commission 👉 Here's our take on her speech and the published political guidelines: On the bright side: ✅ Green Deal Continuation - Still in play, aiming to merge climate protection with a prosperous economy. ✅ Ocean Pact - Although not mentioned in her speech, it's included in the political guidelines. Key points: 1⃣ Among the concerns identified in the 1st minute of her speech : The state of our planet, especially for the younger generation. 2⃣ Main priorities: prosperity, competitiveness, defense, security, EU independence, and democracy. 3⃣ Green Deal's future: - Clear intention to stick to it, yet, with pragmatism, technology-neutrality and innovation a focus on implementation and investment 💸 - Emphasis on reconciling climate protection with economic growth = presented "as a matter of intergenerational fairness" ⚖️ - Next environmental agenda: climate impacts on agriculture, sustainable water management and climate adaptation 👩🌾 4⃣ Promotion of citizen engagement. 5⃣ Calls for social justice and fairness, with references to current geopolitical situation (Ukraine, Gaza, China). 🔍 Our conclusion: ➡ Environmental action is given less prominence but remains on the agenda.  ➡ The ocean was not mentioned in the speech but is in the political guidelines. ➡ We have immense work ahead, but we're ready to take it on! Act for the Ocean 🇪🇺 Following the EU elections in June, the new elected members of the European Parliament are meeting for the first time in #EPlenary this week. 👀 All our eyes are on you, European Parliament, in this pivotal constitutive session where you will decide upon EU institutions’ leadership for the next five years. You will: - Elect the President of the European Parliament for the first half of the legislature, and the rest of the bureau - Elect the President of the European Commission - Decide on the forming of your committees and delegations 🗣 Very importantly, before you decide whether to endorse Ursula von der Leyen for the Presidency of the European Commission, the latter will share her vision of her priorities for the Commission over the next five years. 🧐This presentation is of uttermost importance. A growing environmental threat : biomedia pollution 🌊 In late 2023, thousands of plastic biocarriers (biomedia) were discovered on the beaches of Loire Atlantique in France, a stark reminder of the environmental risks posed by these small plastic used in wastewater treatment. 🔍 A biomedia is a plastic support for bacterial growth used in fluidised bed biological treatment processes (MBBR, etc). Over the past 15 years, Surfrider Foundation Europe has documented 40 major biomedia pollution incidents across Europe, thanks to the testimony reports of citizens and dedicated volunteers. Une menace environnementale croissante : la pollution par les biomédias ⚠️🔴 Fin 2023, des milliers de biomédias en plastiques ont été découverts sur les plages de Loire Atlantique en France, un rappel brutal des risques environnementaux causés par ces petits plastiques utilisés dans le traitement des eaux usées. 🔍 Les biomédias sont des supports en plastique utilisés dans les stations de traitement des eaux usées (STEU) lors de la phase de traitement secondaire (biologique). Au cours des 15 dernières années, Surfrider Foundation a documenté 40 incidents majeurs de pollution par les biomédias à travers l'Europe, grâce aux rapports de témoignages de citoyens et de bénévoles engagé·es.  Notre nouveau rapport met en évidence : 👉 L'ampleur de la pollution par les biomédias 👉 La persistance à long terme de ces biomédias dans l'environnement 👉 L'étendue et l'impact sur la vie marine 👉 Le transport des polluants toxiques Nous avons élaboré des lignes directrices complètes pour atténuer ce problème, en soulignant la nécessité d'améliorer les pratiques dans les installations de traitement des eaux usées.
