Who is the best* low-cost airline in Asia? In this series of posts on the growth of low-cost airlines, this week we compare those in Asia. If AirAsia played a leading role in the development of low-cost airlines in Asia by quickly demonstrating the potential of such a business model and the possibility of establishing a brand far beyond its own borders, many other low-cost carriers have followed suit since then. In a region where tourism has seen significant growth in recent years, not all low-cost carriers have experienced the same level of success. AirAsia and Lion Air (excluding here its full-service subsidiary Batik Air) remain the two largest in Southeast Asia. However, IndiGo’s growth is impressive when compared to its Asian neighbors. Unsurprisingly, VietJet ranks fourth, with a booming Vietnamese market larger than that of Cebu Pacific, for example. Spring Airlines highlights the cautiousness of the Chinese market towards low-cost carriers, while Jeju Air shows the difficulties of establishing itself in an already saturated South Korean market. The real warning is for SpiceJet, whose trend is truly heading in the wrong direction. (*) There is obviously no single answer to this question, as there are numerous criteria for measuring an airline's performance. That being said, if an airline can sustain a certain level of growth over time, it indicates that it is operating in a promising market and has found a formula that works. Beyond the financial aspect and profitability they can generate, a low-cost airline's ability to maintain growth is generally a good sign for investors in the medium term. Just to put things in perspective. The population in Europe is more concentrated than in the U.S., with shorter distances between large cities, leading to real competition with trains and cars. If, on top of that, the economic context is not easy, it is not surprising to see Low-Cost airlines gaining the upper hand in Europe.
