Happening in #Bogotá, Colombia: We're convening partners to scope a cross-sector scientific campaign that will provide insights needed to unlock climate action. 📅 The "Strategic Workshop on Designing the IMEO Methane Emissions Measurement Campaign in Colombia” takes place 3-4 October. ℹ️ This workshop, organized by UNEP’s IMEO, will serve as a crucial platform for discussing methane measurement techniques applicable in Colombia to support the design of an IMEO "Baseline Study" by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. ➡️ IMEO's multi-sector Baseline Studies aim to provide comprehensive overviews of #methane #emissions and blueprint methodologies that will bridge scientific and regional knowledge gaps. The baseline study in #Colombia is the first campaign of its kind in Latin America and will significantly increase information on methane emissions across all sectors. ➡️ The international event will gather key stakeholders from industry, policy, and science communities, to facilitate impactful discussions on policies, measures and standards, and discuss opportunities to use this data to #CutMethane. ➡️ UN Environment Programme's IMEO exists to provide the world with open, reliable, and actionable data to address methane emissions. Ahead of #COP29 in Azerbaijan, the country’s national oil company SOCAR commits to transparent methane reporting and management by joining UN Environment Programme’s flagship Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0.   OGMP 2.0 empowers companies to improve the quality and accuracy of emissions data to #CutMethane and support their countries’ climate efforts under the #ParisAgreement and the Global Methane Pledge.   The latter is a US-EU-led effort of over 150 countries, including Azerbaijan, committed to collectively reducing global methane emissions 30% by 2030.   SOCAR is now part of a growing group of national oil and gas companies acting on methane, which represents a crucial mitigation opportunity they represent over half of the oil and gas produced globally.   We welcome SOCAR to the Partnership, which now encompasses 100% of oil and gas operations in Azerbaijan as part of its reporting framework and community of practice.   We hope that SOCAR’s efforts and leadership on emissions reporting and management will move the region towards net zero and inspire other NOC to join OGMP 2.0.   Learn more about OGMP 2.0: ogmpartnership.com

🚨 It’s time to turn pledges into progress to #CutMethane.    🌍 The International Energy Agency (IEA), UN Environment Programme’s IMEO, and Environmental Defense Fund have launched a framework to track and ensure measurable progress on methane reductions in the oil and gas sector ➡️ ensuring companies deliver on commitments made at #COP28 via the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC).    📉 Methane emissions from oil and gas remain a significant driver of global warming ➡️ The new framework provides a roadmap on how the industry can act now to meet 2030 climate targets.    📊 Subsequent assessments from IEA, UNEP’s IMEO, and EDF will track companies’ progress against key metrics – which include the use of credible, science-based data and reporting protocols of UNEP's OGMP 2.0—the oil and gas industry’s only comprehensive, measurement-based methane reporting framework.    📡 Transparency will be essential, and new satellites like MethaneSAT and Carbon Mapper, combined with rigorous reporting through OGMP 2.0 will provide companies and other stakeholders the insights needed to ensure progress is made.   https://lnkd.in/dus9vj6V

🚀 Data-driven efforts to #CutMethane can help deliver #CleanAirNow alongside rapid climate progress. ✅ Everyone has a right to breathe clean air, yet pollution causes over 8 million premature deaths every year – in addition to trillions in economic damages. ✅ The good news is that we increasingly have the data and insights needed to take action and reduce pollutants like #methane. ✅ UN Environment Programme and International Energy Agency (IEA) analysis found that fast action to #CutMethane pollution from fossil fuels could avert over a million premature deaths and provide $260 billion in economic benefits through 2050 – while helping keep climate goals within reach. 🌍 This #WorldCleanAirDay, we urge stakeholders around the world to invest in clean air and deliver on this critical human right. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d6au53C

Collaboration is putting satellite data into action to #CutMethane 🛰 🌍 Thrilled to welcome partners of the UN Environment Programme's Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) to Paris to explore ways to accelerate and scale the initiative’s impact. 🔺 MARS is the first global satellite detection and notification system providing actionable data on very large methane emissions around the world. 🔺 The system draws on over a dozen methane-sensing satellites orbiting the globe to give countries and companies the data they need to drive mitigation action. 🔺 Credible data is key to unlocking methane action at speed and scale, and MARS is empowering stakeholders to achieve the goals of the Global Methane Pledge and keep climate stability within reach. 🤝 UN Environment Programme's IMEO is pleased to be working alongside partners including the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, International Energy Agency (IEA), The World Bank, United States, and European Commission to deliver progress at speed and scale via MARS. 👏👏 Growing engagement in the MENA region to empower stakeholders to take the lead in methane assessment and mitigation! The UN Environment Programme's IMEO co-organized an intensive training on methane emissions, detection and quantification, and mitigation opportunities in the Kingdom of Bahrain. 🎯 The training highlighted IMEO’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) and Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), including discussion of how both initiatives can enable mitigation. The Kingdom of Bahrain recently appointed a focal point for engagement with UNEP’s IMEO on MARS, and BAPCO Energies joined the OGMP 2.0 in November 2023. This event demonstrated important progress on efforts to enhance methane management and sustainability practices in the Kingdom of Bahrain. 🛰 As a core implementer of the Global Methane Pledge — which Bahrain has joined — IMEO exists to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to help governments and companies reduce emissions.
