🛰 At today's White House Super Pollutant Summit: the UN Environment Programme's IMEO announces new participation in efforts translating satellite data to action. 🔺 UNEP's Methane Alert and Response Program, which puts satellite data directly in the hands of governments and companies, now has nominated focal points in place that represent 60% of global oil and gas production. 🔺 MARS uses data from over a dozen earth observation instruments to detect major methane emissions and drive action by informing stakeholders with the power to act. 🔺 Notifications have already led to successful methane emissions mitigation, and countries where 2/3 of emissions were detected by MARS in 2023 now have focal points in place. Credible data is key to unlocking methane action at speed and scale, and MARS is empowering stakeholders to achieve the goals of the Global Methane Pledge and keep climate stability within reach. 🌎 The UN Environment Programme is helping scale data-driven and policy solutions to mitigate methane through Global Methane Pledge implementers IMEO and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, which is also a MARS partner. Reducing methane emissions is the single fastest way to slow global warming as we decarbonize, but the world needs empirical data to enable climate action at scale. UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is harnessing a methane data revolution by putting open, reliable, and actionable data directly into the hands of individuals with the power to reduce emissions. Methane data is critical for closing the emissions gap by focusing mitigation efforts and tracking progress over time. Situated at the centre of the world’s methane data ecosystem, IMEO collects, synthesizes, and publishes data from its Methane Science Studies; from satellites via the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS); through rigorous industry reporting via the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0); and from national emissions inventories. IMEO is a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge – which is a global effort by over 150 countries, led by the EU and US, to reduce global methane emissions 30 per cent by 2030 from 2020 levels.

💡As companies like PetroChina raise their methane ambition by joining the OGDC, we look forward to this being matched by transparency and accountability grounded in credible data. 🛰 Empirical data is essential for companies to cut methane as it enables them to understand where their emissions come from, how much is emitted, and how this changes over time. 🌐 UN Environment Programme's OGMP 2.0 is the world's only comprehensive, measurement-based framework for the sector to measure, report, and verify its emissions – unlocking powerful methane management and allowing resources to be targeted at the most effective mitigation solutions. 📈 The partnership already encompasses over 140 companies representing more than 40% of global oil and gas production, and we look forward to more joining it to translate methane commitments into tangible results. Highlights of last week's #HLPF side event "Keeping 1.5 within Reach, Setting NDCs 3.0 in Motion": 🔺 Countries must step up Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) ambition to keep climate goals within reach. 🔺 Aligning NDCs with broader development and policies can achieve both Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. 🔑 Methane ambition is a key component of this, as it is the most powerful lever we can pull to immediately slow our current rate of warming as we decarbonise. ➡️ The data needed to act and #CutMethane is increasingly becoming available, thanks in part to IMEO's efforts to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to those empowered to reduce emissions. 📺 Watch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/dwenBWMY

Methane is the low-hanging fruit for climate action. But to reduce emissions, reliable information is needed to answer key questions: Where do emissions come from? How can they be mitigated? How are they changing over time? 🔍 As part of UN Environment Programme's methane science studies, a research campaign in Romania integrated data from various sources to uncover the true extent of emissions and showed an opportunity to reduce them. ➡️ New EU methane regulations will help scale the use of credible data to #CutMethane across the oil and gas sector. 📈 Credible measurement-based data is essential for transparency and accountability ➡️ IMEO’s methane science studies are helping by making open, reliable, and actionable data available to those who can act to reduce emissions. 🟢 By coordinating measurement campaigns and collecting data IMEO aims to help stakeholders across Europe and the world improve methane management and enable mitigation and speed and scale. 🚨 From The Guardian: The world experienced 12 straight months with temperatures 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. ➡️ This temperature rise makes extreme weather and catastrophic climate events more likely. 💡Joining forces to #CutMethane is the fastest way to tackle climate change in the short term and move towards a net-zero world. Why? Because methane is a very powerful but short-lived greenhouse gas, meaning that mitigation efforts result in immediate progress to slow warming. In fact, human-caused methane emissions drive roughly 30% of current warming. That's why IMEO exists: to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to those who can reduce methane emissions. Excited for another step forward in the methane data revolution as Carbon Mapper counts down to launch! 🛰 Carbon Mapper will detect methane emissions from point sources as low as 100 kg CH4 per hour, marking a tenfold improvement over current satellites ➡ This advancement will significantly improve our ability to monitor emissions with exceptional detail. Methane emissions vary widely in release rates, spanning from small to large: 🔺 Carbon Mapper will contribute to understanding this continuum of methane emissions. 🔺 It will complement other point source mappers and upcoming area mappers like MethaneSAT, which is currently in orbit. ➡ Together, these technologies will offer comprehensive global tracking of methane emissions. 🛰️ UN Environment Programme's IMEO will integrate this data into its Methane Alert and Response System, which delivers data directly to governments and companies, empowering them to respond to significant emission events and take action to #CutMethane.
