What’s one thing our portfolio companies all have in common? They’re first in line when it comes to industry-changing innovation. BOLD portfolio company CARBIOS was published in Nature Portfolio, one of the world’s most influential scientific journals. The article explores a new process for developing plastics that automatically biodegrade. By embedding enzymes in polylactic acid (PLA) plastics, items will rapidly degrade under the right composting conditions. Materials remain intact during long-term storage, making this solution ideal for commercial packaging applications (e.g., packets, capsules, food containers). In other words, Carbios continues to spearhead cutting-edge innovation to develop eco-friendly packaging solutions that are kinder to the planet, without compromising on quality. “As Carbios expands its portfolio of enzymatic solutions beyond PET, enzyme-embedded PLA represents a major leap forward, addressing a critical gap in the market for compostable plastic,” says Emmanuel LADENT 🌏 CEO CARBIOS. This isn’t the first time Carbios’ groundbreaking work has appeared in Nature; in 2020, the journal highlighted the company’s innovative work in PET biorecycling technology. With this latest article, Carbios underscores its leading position in improving plastic recyclability. Huge congratulations to Carbios for this amazing advancement, and we’re excited to see what’s next for the BOLD portfolio company! “The core is always slow to move – but disruption comes at the edges.” That’s Omar Tawakol approach to innovation. Over the years, Omar has launched startups in digital data and AI. In 2022, his experience led him to launch Rembrand, a startup offering a new take on product placement via regenerative AI. The BOLD portfolio company is the culmination of his ventures and unique take on innovation. Omar’s first venture was a leading data management platform for Fortune 100 marketers – and was a spark of inspiration for what is now Rembrand. He noticed a shift: programmatic ads were becoming more efficient, but consumers were becoming agile at avoiding them. His second venture, an AI company launched in 2017, provided conversational intelligence for meetings. This spotlighted AI's need for massive amounts of training data to drive higher accuracy solutions. Combining his experience with his forward-thinking vision, Rembrand was born. The BOLD portfolio company uses regenerative AI to insert photo-realistic product images or animations into a creator’s video. It allows ads to live seamlessly in content, without interrupting the viewer experience, and improves brand perception. With BOLD’s support, Rembrand and L'Oréal's Garnier Fructis USA joined forces to launch a first-of-its-kind pilot. The collaboration brought together the startup’s unique tech and focus on the creator economy with the brand’s invaluable data. The partnership resulted in a lift in unaided brand awareness, longer on-screen time for the products and a gain in cost-per-second efficiencies. Rembrand will bring that productive partnership across the Group. The startup is set to work with brands across divisions including L’Oréal Luxe, Dermatological Beauty and Consumer Products, as well as enter new regions. At BOLD, we partner with visionary leaders that push the boundaries. The collaboration is just the beginning for the two teams and scaling Omar’s approach to innovation to new heights. #FortuneFavorsTheBOLD #CreateTheBeautyThatMovesTheWorld Cory Treffiletti Carol J. 🧪 From lab to shelf A marine biologist by training, Vincent Usache became CEO of biotech company Microphyt with a single goal: to create scaled-up, sustainable solutions for the ingredients industry through the power of microalgae. “Its potential was known in academia, but there was a bottleneck in production,” says Vincent. “It is a micro-organism which needs extremely well-controlled conditions to grow.” Though an extensive source of bioactives and functional ingredients, microalgae has been left largely unexplored due to these technological limitations. But that’s where Microphyt’s technology comes in. The company’s patented photobioreactor reproduces the natural conditions the micro-organism needs to grow, making it possible to cultivate any kind of microalgae. This places Microphyt at the forefront of the industry: where other players are limited to one or two types of microalgae, Microphyt can grow several thousands of different strains. Every day, L’Oréal’s R&I team works with Microphyt on the Extended Lab platform to help unleash that potential. “The idea behind the collaboration is to benefit from the expertise of both companies,” says Vincent. Launched a year and a half ago, the Lab allows the two teams to identify and scale promising sustainable raw materials . This then contributes to developing eco-friendly, natural ingredients for cosmetics across various categories. “L’Oréal has strong capabilities in finding and evaluating the performance of raw materials, and we have expertise in developing and producing them,” Vincent says. “The partnership merges our strengths we work together to create unique solutions for as-yet unexplored ingredients” This collaboration illustrates the heart of BOLD’s work: partnering with innovative startups to support Group-wide ambitions. With portfolio companies like Microphyt, L’Oréal is making headway on its sustainability roadmap, L’Oréal for the Future. Their partnership is supporting the plan’s aim to have 95% of ingredients be bio-based, derived from abundant minerals, or from circular processes by 2030. As consumers seek out more sustainable options, we’re putting the partnerships together to help bring the power of biotech from the lab to the shelf. #FortuneFavorsTheBOLD #CreateTheBeautyThatMovesTheWorld Anne Colonna Frederic Legrand Aurélia Del Bufalo Ana Kljuic Christophe Babule Laurent SCHMITT Samantha Etienne Muriel ATIAS Tony Khajenouri Julie Pelcener Presca Ahn Filippo Principi Adeline Girou Camille Jaegle Guillaume Climeau

Hot off the press 🔥 As seen in WWD, BOLD portfolio company Debut has inked an agreement with L'Oréal to co-create bio-identical ingredients. These eco-friendly alternatives will replace the conventionally sourced ingredients currently used in the Group’s global beauty and personal care brands. As part of the expanded partnership, Debut will create new bio-based ingredients through its proprietary, advanced bio-manufacturing processes. “Instead of being made through petroleum or cultivation, now [these ingredients] could be made through this biological approach, which is far more sustainable,” Debut Founder and CEO Joshua Britton tells WWD’s Kathryn Hopkins. Debut’s technology combines fermentation with cell-free technology to replace conventional ingredient development methods with processes that are less taxing on environmental resources. The shift is also a key step forward in sustainability roadmap, L’Oréal for the Future. By 2030, the Group aims to have 95% of ingredients in formula be bio-based, derived from abundant materials or from circular processes. The latest agreement between Debut and L’Oréal will contribute to making this goal a reality. At BOLD, we foster partnerships with innovators like Debut to support L’Oréal’s mission to #CreateTheBeautyThatMovesTheWorld. Congratulations to the Debut and L’Oréal teams for this exciting collaboration! #FortuneFavorsTheBOLD Read more details here: https://lnkd.in/g8GuEk4P
