À propos

ITER is an international, large-scale scientific collaboration intended to prove the viability of fusion as an energy source, and to collect data that will contribute substantially toward the design and operation of the subsequent first electricity-producing fusion power plants. To achieve this goal, seven Members (China, European Union, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States) have joined forces to build the ITER Tokamak: the world’s largest fusion device. The seven Members signed the ITER Agreement in 2006, and have agreed to share in every aspect of the project: science, engineering, procurement, financing, staffing, intellectual property, etc. The ITER Project is based in Saint-Paul Lez Durance, in the south of France, where the ITER facility is currently under construction.

Vacuum Vessel Sector Repairs: Progress Update Our team is diligently addressing non-conformities on three vacuum vessel sectors in the Assembly Hall and former Cryostat Workshop. Current Status: Sector #7: Repair began in March, aiming for late August completion. Sector #6: To follow Sector #7. Sector #8: Repair started recently, most affected, partly automated. Operations: - Metal build-up on bevel joints, bumps machined for perfect geometry. - Sector #7: 95% build-up, 50% machining done. - Sector #6: 65% build-up, machining just started. - Sector #8: Extensive fill-up, automated processes in place. Machining is automated with micrometric precision, each position taking about 10 days, across thirteen positions per side. Up to three milling machines operate simultaneously on each sector. Our work is a blend of meticulous craftsmanship and industrial precision. Check out the gallery for an inside look! 📸 #iter #Engineering #Manufacturing #VacuumVessel #TeamEffort #PrecisionEngineering

In a major step towards ITER readiness, our torus and cryostat cryopumps are being prepped for comprehensive cold tests at our specialized test facility. These tests will ensure that the pumps perform optimally at temperatures as low as 4.5 K and as high as 200 °C. A crucial component, the "cryojumper," was installed on June 19 to connect our test facility to the ITER cryoplant. This sophisticated piece, equipped with a 'magic' flange, allows for the efficient testing of each cryopump under operational conditions. The first round of cold tests will begin in May 2025 after the integrated commissioning of the cryoplant. This meticulous testing process will be instrumental in refining our procedures and ensuring the highest standards of performance for the ITER project. Stay tuned for more updates on our journey towards fusion energy! #ITER #Cryopumps #ColdTesting #FusionEnergy #EngineeringInnovation

On 3 July, ITER Director-General Pietro Barabaschi held a press conference with 200 journalists and key stakeholders to discuss the new project plan under evaluation. Key takeaways: 🔹 **ITER's goals remain unchanged**: The first experimental phase is delayed but will be more impactful. 🔹 **New Baseline Plan**: Presented at the 34th ITER Council Meeting, this replaces the 2016 plan. Delays from Covid and component repairs led to re-evaluation, presenting new opportunities. 🔹 **Robust Start to Operations**: Instead of a low-energy first plasma, the new plan prioritizes a more complete machine with integrated systems for hydrogen and deuterium-deuterium plasmas. 🔹 **Scientific Exploitation**: Aims for long pulses at full magnetic energy and current, making the start of research operations more significant. 🔹 **Upgraded Components**: Inclusion of divertor, blanket shield blocks, and other systems. Change from beryllium to tungsten for the plasma-facing blanket first wall, aligning with future fusion reactor projects. 🔹 **Timeline Adjustments**: Full magnetic energy in 2036 and deuterium-tritium operations in 2039, reflecting a delay of 3-4 years from the original plan. DG Barabaschi emphasized that ITER’s mission to demonstrate industrial-scale fusion and achieve a burning plasma with 500 MW of thermal fusion power (Q≥10) remains steadfast. Stay tuned for more updates as we move closer to revolutionizing energy with fusion power! Milestone Achieved in Fusion Energy! On July 1, after two decades of dedicated design, production, fabrication, and assembly across three continents, the historic, multinational ITER fusion energy project proudly celebrated a significant achievement: the completion and delivery of its massive toroidal field coils from Japan and Europe. Nineteen gigantic toroidal field coils arrived in southern France. These essential components will play a crucial role in ITER, the groundbreaking experimental fusion mega-project. By using magnetic confinement, ITER aims to replicate the process that powers the Sun and stars, bringing us closer to a future powered by clean and virtually limitless energy. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Masahito Moriyama, Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy’s Minister of Environment and Energy Security, alongside officials from other ITER member nations. Join us in celebrating this monumental step towards harnessing the power of the stars for a brighter, sustainable future! #ITER #FusionEnergy #SustainableFuture #Science #Innovation #GlobalCollaboration

Reflecting on a Unique Industrial Achievement: Poloidal Field Coils After a decade of effort, the team gathered to celebrate a monumental achievement: the manufacturing and testing of the four largest ring-shaped superconducting magnets ever designed. Starting from an empty facility in 2014, the team built a world-class production line and significantly improved efficiency, reducing fabrication time from over three years to less than three years. Beyond the physical achievement, the technical skills developed will benefit future fusion technology advancements. #IndustrialAchievement #iter #PoloidalFieldCoils #FusionEnergy #Innovation #EngineeringMarvels

34th Meeting of the ITER Council: A Crucial Step Forward Nearly 100 experts and delegates convened on June 19-20, 2024, for the 34th Meeting of the ITER Council, marking a pivotal moment in our journey toward sustainable fusion energy. The ITER Organization and Domestic Agencies presented a significant update to the project baseline, aiming to: ✔️Optimize the Project Schedule ✔️Minimize Delay to start the substantial research operations (full magnet current, deuterium-deuterium fusion operation, etc.) ✔️Lower Licensing and Technical Risks Director-General Pietro Barabaschi's reform program has been instrumental in these efforts, focusing on enhanced project management, quality control, and reporting. The proposed new baseline prioritizes early substantial research operations through efficient tokamak assembly and rigorous pre-assembly testing. The proposed baseline, targeting deuterium-deuterium fusion by 2035, will undergo further evaluation before the Council reconvenes in November 2024. Join us for a hybrid press conference with Director-General Barabaschi on July 3, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. CET. Details on the ITER website under Events. #ITER #FusionEnergy #SustainableFuture #EnergyInnovation #GlobalCollaboration #ScienceAndTechnology #itercouncil
