The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is a community of 149 Member States that work together to observe, understand and manage the shared marine environment that unites us all. The deep ocean may be the last frontier of the planet but, for over half a century, the ocean has also played a leading role in building greater international cooperation. Since it was first formed in 1960 the work of the IOC has evolved from the technological optimism of the space age to the more recent challenges posed by climate change and the increasing demands of a rapidly expanding human population. The cumulative threats posed by warming sea temperatures, ocean acidification and pollution have created an even more urgent need for the critical services provided by the IOC. The ocean provides about half of the oxygen we breathe and it directly supports the livelihoods of about 500 million people, especially in the poorest nations. For many of these nations, ocean-related economic activities such as tourism and artisanal fisheries support up to 30% of national economies. For over 50 years the IOC has worked behind the scenes to enable its Member States to work together to strengthen our scientific understanding of the ocean for the benefit of humanity. However, in recent years, there has been a growing need to highlight the unique intergovernmental value that it provides for Member States, the IOC community, the ocean environment and wider society.

📢 🏙️ The First #OceanDecade International Coastal Cities Conference will take place on 26-27 February 2025 in Qingdao, China! Happening ahead of the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, this event will accelerate the co-design of ocean science to strengthen the ocean’s contribution to the sustainable development of coastal cities. Coastal cities are among the fastest-growing human settlements in the world. They have much to benefit from the growth of a sustainable ocean economy, but also face escalating threats from climate change, ocean pollution, and other environmental risks. The Ocean Decade presents a unique opportunity to harness ocean science and knowledge to address these challenges, enhance the resilience of coastal cities to global change, and improve the living conditions and well-being of their inhabitants. Hosted in collaboration with the Qingdao Municipal People’s Government, the first Ocean Decade International Coastal Cities Conference will mark a pivotal moment in accelerating action for the "Cities with the Ocean" Platform, launched at the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference, and be a major step towards the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference and the planned pre-Conference special event on ‘Ocean Rise and Resilience’. Key stakeholders from coastal cities and territories globally will gather to facilitate knowledge exchange, showcase best practices, and foster collaboration and partnerships to address the challenges and opportunities in generating and using ocean science for sustainable development. Join us to build a better ocean for better cities. Register now: https://ow.ly/QEGe50TAX0X

Meeting in Ottawa on 26 September, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that they will strengthen their cooperation to drive global ocean action, including through the #OceanDecade. 🇨🇦🇫🇷 The Canada-France Declaration on the Ocean states: "We will strengthen our cooperation to ensure that the ocean, which is a common good for humanity, continues to play a crucial role in regulating environmental balances, particularly climate, providing essential food and energy resources, facilitating economic exchanges, and serving as a vital link among countries and human communities. As partners in numerous international forums, we are determined to work together to continue driving global momentum on the ocean, including through the G7, G20 and other multilateral forums, and notably the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 to 2030), and the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) to be held in Nice in June 2025."
