International Day of Light
Organisations civiques et sociales
The annual focal point (May 16th) for celebrating the role of light and light-based technologies in our daily lives.
À propos
The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrates how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace. Each year, around May 16, events are organized worldwide to celebrate the role of light in these various aspects of our daily lives. A resolution supporting the international Day of Light was prepared and was adopted by the UNESCO Executive Board at its 200th session which took place at the UNESCO HQ in Paris, France, on 19 September 2016. Following the award of the grant announced by Società Italiana di Fisica and SIOF for the International Day of Light 2024, we organized an event titled “Shedding Light on the Fast Lane: Exploring Ultra Short Light Pulses,” held on May 20, 2024, at the Department of Physics “Ettore Pancini” of the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, entirely dedicated to attosecond physics and ultrafast optics. The day involved about a hundred people, including undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students, researchers, and professors. The first half of the event featured a series of seminars focused on the theme of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics: attosecond physics and ultrafast optics! In the afternoon, participants had the opportunity to closely explore the developing technologies in the department's optical research laboratories. It was wonderful to have you with us to celebrate a brilliant Day of Light✨! #InternationalDayofLight #Physics #AttosecondPhysics #UltrafastOptics #Research #Innovation #Community #EventHighlights

I had the great pleasure to talk to Prof. Pierre Agostini, laureate of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics with Anne L'Huillier and Ferenc Krausz, at the end of his lecture given at the Université Grenoble Alpes on the International Day of Light 2024. https://lnkd.in/eYGyXGpK Pierre Agostini is famous for shrinking the measurement of time down to the attosecond, a billionth of a billionth of a second, using optical techniques based on creating high-order harmonics of light. Magnificent work! Very inspiring to those involved in the science and the engineering of light.

And we did it! The Pratibimb Photonics Labs, SCEE IIT Mandi had its first school and community outreach activity on the 28th of May, 2024, organized on occasion of the International Day of Light 2024, #lightday2024. We invited high school students from local schools (Government Senior Secondary School Kathindi, Government Senior Secondary School Nishu, and Mindtree School) and showed them lens demos, an RPi camera based microscope, solar eclipse on a table-top, Tyndall effect, polarization colours and diffraction-based experiments. Towards the evening, we opened the doors to the IIT Mandi community, and we had some wonderful young and inquisitive visitors who asked the most insightful of questions! All the young ones got a specially printed sticker too :) Massive credit goes to the Pratibimb Lab Research students - Iqbal, Adity, MUTHUSERPI S, Suraksha Kundal and Anand Mohan - who put together the demonstrations, and patiently and tirelessly explained the experiments to the visitors all day long. A big thanks also goes to Tarun Verma - an absolute mensch - who helped us in getting in touch with the local schools, and arranged all the associated logistics. Our thanks also go to the school principals of the respective schools, who kindly facilitated the visit of the students. Outreach activities are hard work, but it also leads to fulfilling and rewarding experiences, benefiting not only those who are visiting or demonstrating, but the community at large. In this regard, we sincerely thank Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), DST for the Scientific Social Responsibility grant, using which we have now built an outreach kit that we can use for more such activities. We also thank SCEE IIT Mandi for actively supporting us in this endeavor. Aditya Nigam IIT Mandi Laxmidhar Behera International Day of Light

From solar cells, laser fusion and measurement for healthcare and clinical applications - last week I was honoured to present a 'Trip on the Light Fantastic' on the International Day of Light, to show the excitement and importance of light for society. This was an event organised by the University of Adelaide Optica student chapter (thanks to Gabriel Britto Monteiro, Ramses Eduardo Bautista Gonzalez and Jacob Charvetto). My talk covered three aspects: Light for energy, light for measurement, and light for life. It was great to see lots of questions from high school students all the way through to teachers and professors. A pleasure to share my knowledge and passion - and inspire the younger generation!
