Hearst III, made to Friends of IHES, the partner organization of IHES in the United States. For the anniversary of the Chair, IHES has made Oliver Ralfe’s intimate documentary, “Barry Mazur and the Infinite Cheese of Knowledge,” available on its YouTube channel. France Culture has just released an excellent series of podcasts (in French) by Marie Durrieu on the life and work of Alexander Grothendieck who was a Permanent Professor in Mathematics at IHES from 1958 to 1970. Episode 2, in particular, touches upon his revolutionary work in algebraic geometry carried out at the Institute. Besides an audio archive of Léon Motchane, the Institute's founder and first Director, it also includes testimonies by Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Pierre Deligne, Michel Demazure, Luc Illusie, Laurent Lafforgue and Emmanuel Ullmo amongst many others. https://lnkd.in/eDmAgf4b

Following the scientific breakfast organized in July 2023 with Thibault Damour, theoretical physicist and Professor Emeritus at IHES, the Institute returned to the British capital in June 2024. IHES gathered its London community on June 19th for a scientific breakfast with Yilin Wang Wang, junior professor of mathematics at IHES since 2022, introduced by Rama CONT. This event was organized with the support of the Department of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation of the French Embassy in the United Kingdom for the second year in a row. https://lnkd.in/eHj-G2nz

Next week, IHES will host this year’s edition of the Life, Structure and Cognition (LSC) conference. The LSC conferences aim to highlight the latest advances at the interface of biology and artificial intelligence. The 2024 edition, focused on the notion of time, will be held from June 17 to 20 at the Marilyn & James Simons Conference Center. Moreover, on June 19, Lera Boroditsky, Professor of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego, will give a public lecture on how languages and cultures construct time at Institut Jacques Monod in Paris. https://lnkd.in/daB9ey-D Grazia Gonella ETH Zürich

The Russian mathematician Sergei Novikov (University of Maryland, Steklov Institute) passed away on June 6th. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1970 for his proof of the topological invariance of the Pontrjagin classes of a differentiable manifold and his study of Thom spaces. Sergei Novikov regularly visited IHES in the 1980s and 1990s. At the time, he was working on topics related to mathematical physics.
