The 2024 Mid-Atlantic Meetup, hosted by UMaryland iGEM, took place on August 10th at the beautiful campus of the University of Maryland, College Park (USA). Heyuan "Michael" Ni, represented iGEM at the event and gave a talk about his story with iGEM, how he has seen iGEM empower its principle as to enabling synbio to help "local people solving local problems", fundraising for iGEM Competition, his appreciation for local alliances, how he personally applied what he learned from attending the previous year's Mid-Atlantic Meetup to take the lead and rekindle the connection between Bay Area iGEM teams by hosting the first Bay Area Bioengineering Symposium earlier this year. Exciting Progress in the Mastering SciComm Course! 🚀 We’ve just wrapped up the fourth week of our Mastering SciComm course with an enthusiastic cohort of 19 active participants. Here’s a quick recap of our first four insightful sessions: 1️⃣ Fundamentals of Science Communication with Joseph Opoku Gakpo. We explored strategies to establish credibility and deliver effective science communication. 2️⃣ Basics of Science Illustration with Etienne Raimondeau. This session focused on simplifying complex ideas into clear, informative visuals. 3️⃣ Basics of Visual SciComm with Ipsa Jain, a scientist turned illustrator. We learned how to blend visuals and narratives to transform complex scientific concepts into engaging and memorable art. 4️⃣ Digital Marketing for Science Communication with Isabel Mendoza Poudereux. This session offered a deep dive into creating comprehensive social media strategies tailored for science and technology professionals. Next up is our fourth lesson: Writing for Broad Audiences and Engaging with the Media by seasoned journalist Joan Conrow, who will guide us in crafting compelling op-ed pieces. iGEM Zurich 2022 publishes their project on sensing and mitigating Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) using a novel probiotic kit in ACS Synthetic Biology. Their modular system comprises three components: a transcription factor-based sensor (NorR) capable of detecting the inflammation biomarker nitric oxide (NO), a type 1 hemolysin secretion system, and a therapeutic cargo consisting of a library of humanized anti-TNFα nanobodies.
