On this day in 1974, fifty years ago, #Curitiba was the scene of a major invention in the field of urban mobility: the first #BusRapidTransit (#BRT) was put into service thanks to the ingenuity and daring of #JaimeLerner. The former mayor of Curitiba benefited from funding granted by the federal government to build a metro. Lerner realised that a railway system would cost ten times more than buses running on a dedicated bus right-of-way. “Creativity starts once you take away a zero from your budget.” He therefore placed an order with Volvo for a double-articulated bus capable of carrying up to 300 passengers. As an architect and urban planner, Lerner favoured the creation of high-density population and employment corridors around the BRT routes. He also brought in a bus network hierarchy to ensure an efficient and dense feeder system. BRT stations were designed to facilitate and speed up bus loading and unloading: platforms, tickets validated at the station itself, disabled access, shelters. In his own words, Lerner ‘metronised’ the bus, introducing the ‘bus’ while utilising the advantages of metro: capacity, journey speed, service frequency. In the last fifty years, 191 cities have introduced BRT systems of different types, sizes and operating schemes (source: www.brtdata.org). UITP will celebrate the fifty years of the BRT on November 27-29, 2024 at its birthplace in Curitiba during an event that will see the participation of experts and professionals representing BRTs from all over the world. 🌍 Cities are evolving, and data is the key to their future! We have discussed and explored the impact emerging technologies will have on the climate resilience of future cities. In particular, we examined how satellite data, artificial intelligence, and digital twins are already transforming how we plan and manage urban areas in response to the climate challenges we face. We are honoured to have had this conversation with Iffat Tariq, CDO of I&I Software, Inc.; Gaetano Volpe, CEO of Latitudo 40; Jose Benitez, CEO of Secmotic; Davor Meersmann, CEO of FutureCraft Habitats; Michael Prange, professor at Kiel University of Applied Sciences.
