What surprised the students of the summer school ❔ Last week, the first edition of the Photonics TALENT Summer School was held, which brought together some 50 European students for a week packed with expert talks and company visits. Participants were pleasantly surprised by several aspects of the event, including: ✔ "There are so many companies which work in photonics and optics and lasers, and they’re all located here in Bordeaux in one place" ✔ "It kind of opened my eyes a lot more to the different opportunities there are to work in photonics" ✔ "The labs are very nice to see, there is a lot of great equipment, they’re well organized and very high standards" More testimonials in video 🎥 We’re so happy that the first Photonics TALENT Summer School was such a success, highlighting our region and its expertise in photonics. The first Photonics TALENT Summer School has opened its doors ! 🚀 More than 50 students representing 22 European universities arrived in Bordeaux today to attend the first day of conferences on Laser source development. Our Engineers at SMART Photonics went to the Eindhoven University of Technology to present "Shape the Photonic Future", to the students of Applied Physics. 👨🎓 Kirsten Gerritsma and Guilherme Sombrio introduced the company to the students, talked a bit about the day-to-day life as an Engineer (and as an intern!) and showed interesting projects that we are part of. Participating in academic collaborations and EU projects gives multiple advantages, such as access to world wide research, skills and expertise in the field of integrated photonics. The lecture was a success, and I know the team had also a lot of fun meeting the future Engineers and Scientists. We hope they learned from us, as much as we learned from them. A big thank you to Giulia van Rossem and the Study Association for Applied Physics "J.D. van der Waals" for organizing the lecture.

We had a great short trip to Boston with the Thorlabs Mobile Photonics Lab Experience attending the American Association of Physics Teachers - AAPT Summer Meeting. Over 170 physics teachers and their families visited the mobile lab to experience and provide feedback on our approaches to introduce photonics technologies. It was also great to see the Physics Instructional Resource Association (pira.wildapricot.org) perform their live demonstrations, and see how much the Seaport has developed since my last visit over a decade ago. Thank you Debbie Andres for the visit request and Dan Cooke for helping make the visit happen. And a special shout out to Matthew Wright for the review on location (https://lnkd.in/e-7GW8iA). Unfortunately the lab snacks were tucked away so they didn't melt in the heat... we'll make sure you get some next time. 🙂 A big thank you to our employees Jeffrey Bloomer, Celeste Carbonell, Daniel Inigo, and Adam Prokofiew who received glowing reviews on their presentations through the 90 degree temperatures.

We had a blast at The Long Night of Science! It was a pleasure to open our doors & laboratories to show visitors our latest innovations in #ICT. We brought out some of our most cutting-edge topics: #TerahertzTechnologies, InP-based photonic-integrated circuits (PICs), fiber optic communication and #QuantumEncryption. As well as #6G, volumetric video streaming & our latest #ExplainableAI research. And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the six demos our video & imaging technologies team prepared to show the various application fields of their technologies: From agriculture to construction, medicine, culture of remembrance and citizen science. Thank you to all visitors – we could not have asked for a more interested audience. And a very big shout out to all our colleagues who made this day possible – especially our showroom team Marc Reznicek, Patty Riedlinger (Fechtler) & their colleagues! This year we had the delight of hosting BIFOLD - Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data in our Science Tech Space @ HHI. Kudos to the team for the great collaboration.
