Multi-stakeholder partnership accelerating the transition to efficient, climate-friendly cooling #GlobalCoolingPledge

À propos

The UNEP-led Cool Coalition is a global multi-stakeholder network that connects a wide range of key actors from government, international organizations, businesses, financial institutions, academia, and civil society to facilitate knowledge exchange, advocacy, and joint action toward a rapid global transition to efficient and climate-friendly cooling. The Cool Coalition promotes a ‘reduce-shift-improve-protect-leverage,’ cross-sectoral approach to meet the cooling needs of both industrialized and developing countries through better building design, energy efficiency, renewables, and thermal storage, as well as phasing down HFCs. Cool Coalition partners are collaborating on policy, finance, technology, and science to meet growing demands for cooling in a comprehensive manner, all aimed at raising climate ambition in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals while complementing the goals of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Agreement. The Cool Coalition advocates for a structured approach to efficient, climate-friendly cooling for all, which means: REDUCING the need for mechanical cooling through better urban planning and building, including nature-based solutions such as green spaces, roofs, and walls. SHIFTING cooling to renewables, thermal storage, and district cooling approaches. IMPROVING conventional cooling by increasing efficiency and reducing the GWP of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and demand response measures. PROTECTING vulnerable people from the effects of extreme heat and the consequences of unreliable medical and agricultural cold chains. LEVERAGING cooperation between different actors to achieve a greater collective impact. 🌍 Day 3: Technical Visit & Workshop Series on District Cooling in the UAE 🌍 Representatives of the Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau (RSB), Dubai Electricity and Water Regulatory Body, shared the benefits of the District Cooling Regulatory Framework in Dubai, revealing impressive savings of $30 billion from district cooling projects so far. 🏭 Notably, the team discussed how regulatory support has fostered open competition among district cooling providers and billing service providers, resulting in 4 licensed DC providers and 27 billing service providers operating in Dubai. RSB also highlighted the collaborative efforts between large building developers and district cooling providers during the planning and design stages. This partnership ensures optimal design and cost-efficiency for district cooling systems, enhancing their overall performance. 💹 A significant highlight was the stability of chilled water tariffs for consumers, which have not increased in the last 11 years in Dubai. ❄ 🌟 Stay tuned to our page for more discussions on similar topics! ❄ 🌟 #DistrictCooling #Sustainability #Dubai #RSB #EnergyEfficiency #Innovation #UAE UN Environment ProgrammeCOP28 UAEEmpower / Benjamin Hickman / Rahul Agnihotri / Thibaut Pasquet

    Chief Executive Officer at Tabreed

It’s often said that success is down to who you know, not what you know. A rather cynical outlook, perhaps, but I believe that, at least when it comes to Tabreed, there’s a healthy balance between the two. Our expertise in district cooling is unrivalled but we also benefit from the people and organisations we align with, who share our values and a desire to improve business and residential communities in other countries where cooling is rapidly becoming essential for survival. Tabreed has for years been working closely with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Cool Coalition so this week, when they arranged a special delegation from overseas to discover more about district cooling, naturally we got involved. Partnership, Progress and Performance are the very essence of this company and we are here for the benefit of everyone, everywhere.

On Tuesday 16 July, Tabreed’s CEO, Khalid Abdulla Al Marzooqi, was proud to host a special, international delegation organised by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and under the framework of the Cool Coalition, as part of a three-day technical visit and workshop series on district cooling. The day started with a visit to Department of Energy Abu Dhabi, where the group learned about regulation of the district cooling sector and how it helps governments work towards achieving net-zero targets, while setting standards of service that benefit suppliers and customers alike. This was followed by presentations made by Tabreed’s Chief Operating Officer, Antonio Di Cecca, who spoke about our world-leading initiatives with geothermal energy and nanofluid technology, and Chief Development Officer, Philippe Coquelle, who explained in detail how district cooling works, the benefits it offers and the commercial structures available to developers. The group then took a guided tour of our plant on Al Maryah Island, which supplies that entire district with sustainable and essential cooling. Delegates represented Tunisia, Morocco and Pakistan, and the visit provided extensive opportunities to forge long-lasting relationships and collaborations, with Tabreed’s renowned experts sharing their unrivalled experience and expertise in this vitally important industry. #Districtcooling #Sustainability #netzero #Leadership
